There Was a Strange Quiet Today

I didn't notice for a long time. Somehow, you don't notice quiet. It's just there. But there was definitely something missing, something that usually makes up the background noise of my life. Finally, I figured out what it was. The phone wasn't ringing. I sat down with my coffee to watch TV. The phone didn't ring. I went into the bathroom. The phone didn't ring. I got busy organizing something in the kitchen and still, the phone didn't ring. Seems the telephone jack is not working and needs to be replaced. The phone company can't get here to do it until Friday. Imagine that. Two days of quiet. Two days of never being interrupted when I am busy doing something, two days of no ringing during my favorite TV show, no telemarketers and no calls from Phony Microsoft Technical Support to tell me I have a virus on my computer. After two days of this, I might not let the technician in to fix it.

We don't have a land line. We use our cell phones. It would be nice to have a day when it wouldn't ring at all but then I would probably worry that something was wrong with someone

Well, I hate my cell phone and I don't want to give the number out or plug it into websites or registrations online for anything, not even sites I buy from. Then the number gets on lists that get sold to other companies, etc. If my cell phone started getting random telemarketer calls, I would throw it out a window.

@Rollo1 Fortunately, that hasn't happened to me yet. I don't normally give out my cellphone number online. It's only used for friends, family and doctors.

Our phone doesn't ring a lot, but I'd miss it because my internet would probably stop working too.

My service is still on, it's just the telephone jack is broken. I taped the phone line into the jack so it works now, but it's a temporary fix.

@Rollo1 Well that's not so bad then. I once had to do that with our TV aerial. I left it that way for a long time too because I didn't want the expense of calling a workman to fix it properly. Eventually we had to call one to work on something else and he only made things worse. It was finally fixed properly a few months ago.

We use our landline so little that the cost of having a phone is more expensive that making calls. We do however have some friends who phone so stil need landline

A landline will also help in an emergency here because if you call 911 and can't speak, the address shows up in their caller ID, but it doesn't for a cell phone.

My landline mostly consists of people wanting me to give them money (charities and scammers mostly). People who want to talk to me or the kids usually use the cell phones. I'm thinking of getting rid of the landline.

I don't answer numbers I don't recognize. But landlines send your address to 911 if you call but cell phones don't.

The phone's inability to ring became a blessing to you . Our phone seldom rings too. It only rings maybe every other day .

I enjoy the quiet. For several moths I only had a cellphone. I did not miss the ringing of the telephone.

Ha That is very funny my friend. I am glad that you got that lovely time of quiet for yourself. Isnt it amazing how much that phone interrupts our peace?

Do not open that door, do not let the technician come in, I should plan to sabotage our land line for a few days of peace.
