Do you bite your nails?

I bite mine constantly. I don't know why, but I guess I get bored, have nothing to do so I bite them. I think it might come from being nervous, at least that is what I have een told. I am trying to stop myself from biting them, as it is a very bad habit that I need to break. I don't know what to do except to put something bitter on them, and I know that would stop me for sure. The thing of it is, I have been doing this for years, and now that I am 67, I should know enough not to do it anymore. I keep telling myself no, but I lost as I keep on doing it. I know that habits are hard to break, and this one sure is, but I will do whatever I can to stop, as I have done it long enough, that is for sure.

I bite my nails as well. I've never used bitter nail polish or oils but I have managed to control it for some time. It comes from stress in my case, I stopped smoking three months ago and I have more stress than usual.
Maybe you can control it if you pay attention and notice when you bite them the most. Is it when you watch tv, when you have akward moments, when you are getting stressed? The first step for me was to become concious and realise that I am biting them while I do it. Because most of the times I don't realise that until someone tells me.

@rosekiss Any habit after years of doing something is hard to break. What works for one, doesn't mean it will work for another. You will have to find something that works for you. If typing here does that, then really get busy typing.

@TiarasOceanView Yea, that would be an idea, except it would be hard to type with them on. I might end up typing one mistake after another.

I don't have this habit. I think it is not very difficult to get rid of it? Perhaps you can put some medicine oil on your fingers and you will not bit your fingers for sure. As it will already smell strongly and you will keep away from your mouth.

@youless Well, as far as my kids are concerned, they are adults, marrried with children of their own, so not sure if any of them bite their nails or not. All I know is, I am ttying my best not to do it, as it has been a habit for way to long, and I certainly need to correct it.

I do know there is something that can be put on the fingers, that is very bitter, and I know once I put that on my fingers, I wouldn't put my fingers in my mouth ever again. I have been doing better lately though, and I think before I put them in my mouth.

Never got into that habit. I used to stretch my wrists a lot as a kid until I was told to stop doing it.

@rosekiss No it didn't hurt at all that's why I kept doing it until they told me stop doing it. It took me a few days but I got rid of the habit.

I don't bite mine but if one of them chips off I pick at it until I have it torn down to the nub. I try to keep them painted so that they don't chip off as much.

@rosekiss Keeping those fingers flying on the keyboard works wonders.

@Shellyann36 It sure does. It keeps me from even thinking of even putting my fingers to my mouth.

I was a nail biter until a few years ago and then I just forced myself to stop. I found that putting my fingers in my mouth was related to my always getting sick with colds etc. Once I stopped biting my nails I no longer got sick. Weird isn't it

That really is strange, as I have never put the two together at all. I have been trying to keep myself busy so that I won't put my fingers to my mouth. I do have a clippers, and now I am starting to use those so I won't bite them.

It happens for me when I get nervous about something, or I get worried. It is a bad hair that I do need to break, and it will happen in time.

@birjudanak If I am worried about something, then I will bite my nails, but I find that coming in here and typing, keeps me from doing that. It is a habit i certainly need to break.

Yes, me too. I will bite them without realizing that i am, and I know I need to stop too, and I hope that I can break the habit soon, as I have been doing it for years, so it will be hard to break, but I know I can do it if I put my mind to it.

My exhusband used to bite his nails so bad, that he ended up with nubs.
I find, that by being in here, I just don't think about biting them, so I don't do it then. I try to be in here as much as possible as I love being here, and so I don't bite them so much.

I never thought about doing that, but maybe that would work as well. I have been trying lately to keep my hands as busy as I can, so that I won't put my fingers to my mouth to bite my nails. I know that in time I will break the habit for good.

It has a very been habit, that I certainly need to break, and I will in time. I am trying to keep my hands busy so that I won't put my fingers in my mouth. So far, it is working as I am keeping busiy in here at least in the morning, and at night I will color so that I don't bite them, which is the main thing.

Yes, it sure is. I have tried for so long to stop biting them, but to no avail. The only that stops me is being in here, as i interact and don't even think about biting them, so I will have to be here more often.
