A tall war memorial that looks as if it has been recently cleaned with a rather foamy looking stone. What I dislike and don’t understand is the ankle high chain fence round its base. I appreciate putting fences round to deter vandals but most people would have no problem stepping over this while it could be a nuisance to anyone wishing to place flowers or wreaths on the memorial in remembrance of relatives lost in the wars.

It seems to be a common practice to surround war memorials with low chain fences, often with dog-tooth insertions in the chains. I presume that they delineate the area which is allowed to be filled with floral arrangements and wreaths around the time of Armistice Day. I find most war memorials to be rather depressing than elegant.

They usually open the chains on ceremonial occasions. I expect the chains are a deterrent to people sitting on the memorial base or trying to climb the structure.

@arthurchappell Mostly the chains are at such a height that they're only a serious deterrent to toddlers and drunks!

Perhaps the chain is meant to be decorative. I have seen similar.

agreed, not sure why exactly the chain, but at least the stone holding it is the same so it doesnt distract too badly
