Extremes in the human psyche

I often wonder about extremes in the human psyche. I wonder what makes these types do what they do. Like some people are overly critical and some are not at all. Love and hate so close a kin that one can merge into the other sometimes. Do the spectrums come back around and meet each other? By this I mean that in some there is the heartless, impassive, unfeeling, hateful and malevolent characteristics to their personality. The type of person that is demented, amoral, psychopathic, pseudo- masochistic, anti-social, and just down right evil. This causes their lives to be chaotic, they are narcissistic and self involved. Their lives end up being lived through horrible fantasies that they act out and they end up either in prison or in a mental facility. And all hope for a normal life is gone. But, then you have the other end of the spectrum where a person is kind, generous, caring, compassionate, loving, giving, merciful, humane, tolerant, and good. They are so sensitive to others needs and are so empathic and giving of themselves that they do not have a normal life. They spend all of their time feeling others pain and trying to help others. To a point where they become sick and in some cases become so emotional because they just can't give enough that they become suicidal or revert to drug or alcohol to sooth this feeling of just not being able to give enough. So, you have these two extremes. Which is really worse? One may hurt more people but the other feels they can't help enough and becomes distraught over it to the point of harming themselves. In doing so they brake down the family and circle of friends. What makes people the way they are? What makes for these extremes?

I think that the good person hurting themselves so badly should be looked at too.

I am not sure how to respond - but I believe that when something I am doing is tugging at my heart and making me hurt inside, I need to step away from it, regardless of who needs me, - A cart does not need a broken wheel to get ahead - and if I am broken then the cart cannot move.

There is not a lot I understand about why people are the way they are or extremes really Celtic. I know for myself, I have to keep in check all the time. Being extreme does not help anything.

I agree @crazyhorseladycx & @celticeagle it takes a lot to come back from those feelings ... with lots of help and advice and sometimes medication... and the sad truth is ... some folks just don't make it...

Those are some really great questions but I have no clue. I have often wondered this myself as I have known both kinds of people.

And I don't think there are any concrete answers. Each person is an individual with individual feelings and backgrounds.
