200 poems, 800 songs, 30 films. Latest survey among russian population that had a question "Who can you call a XX century idol?" showed that Yuriy Gagarin took the 1st place and Vladimir Vysotsky - the 2nd. Plenty of monuments and some streets' names show his influence on Russian culture. He was a legendary singer and actor, who died during XX Olympic Games in Moscow . Perhaps he suffered from alcohol or drug addiction. His famous film works are Hamlet, WWII films and Soviet detectives. Vysotsky's characters were vivid, significant and natural. His songs are known to every russian who is over 25. Bard songs, songs-monologues and thieves' cant were among Vladimir Semenovich's genres of musical art. Despite some taboos for Soviet government in his songs, he was "of phenomenal influence" even inter vivos. Vysotsky was officially generally recognized after his death in 1980. Youtube song of his "Fastidious horses":

I'm embarrassed. Everybody else who has commented seems to know who you're talking about. I would have do some more research. Thanks for the introduction.

I have heard the name of this singer before. As usual those who are not politically correct are appreciated by the public.

It comes as no surprise that Yuri Gagarin was top of the list.

He was quite prolific. You say there were taboo subjects in his songs? Perhaps that is a reason for popularity as well.
