in the chest. It really does. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura which is the lining surrounding the lungs. There are several reasons for this condition but viral infections spreading form the lungs into the pleural cavity is the most common. This makes the inflamed pleural layers rub against each other every time the lungs expand to breathe in air. This can cause sharp pain.
One time I was at work when I started to have all the symptoms of a heart attack. Arm numbing, that weird tingling along the jaw line. I felt dizzy and I was setting down. I told my manager and she called 911. That is when I was diagnosed with pleurisy.
I don't think that I have acute pleurisy. When I am overly tired I sleep in the fetal position and I think my ribs get jammed together with my lungs and causes pain. The pain can be excruciating too. I had gall bladder problems back in the mid 90's and one night I awoke in the middle of it with such pain in my check I felt like I was being stabbed both in the front of my chest and the back at the same time. Horrible pain. I got out of bed and went into the living room. I was crying it hurt so badly. I was tossing around the idea of calling 911. I had woke up my ex who was not happy. He didn't seem to understand that I needed to get up in the morning and go to work too. (It was always all about him.)
I did get gall bladder op and the pain isn't as bad but I still have the attacks. They just come out of the blue and hurt like something awful. A few days ago I woke up with one. I must have been sleeping weird again. The only thing I can do is breathe slowly in and out and drink something ice cold. That helps. Doesn't make sense to take anything for the pain because it only last a few minutes. But in those few minutes I used to think I wasn't going to make it through. The only pain I have known like it is child birth.

I got diagnosed with this awhile back because off all the surgeries i've had and now i have so much scar tissue. My stomach tightens up when i get the pain and it is in my sides thru my back and really hurts at times. Nothing they can do about it though. Sorry you have to deal with this, did they give you medicine to help with pain when it happens ?

No medicine because it comes on quick and doesn't last long, thank goodness. Have you tried drinking something cold? That is the only thing that helps me.

@celticeagle I'm not sure. Maybe you should see a doctor to know for sure.

See the doc? Why? Nothing he can do about it. No meds or anything.

@Inlemay .....the attacks only last a few minutes. A pill of any kind would take a while to take affect. So none are of any value. The pain would be over before it even reached my blood stream.

@celticeagle i know what it is - but cant they give you some or other anti inflammatory or something to ease the pain. My dad had it after his lung collapsed from a bullet that went through his lung and lodged in his rib cage in his back.
