My first Constructive criticism--or--Anyone Else Out There Write Fan Fictions ?Some

I've mentioned elsewhere that I am writing a fan fiction over on FF.net. While I've written several fan fictions over the years, I've never posted any on that site. A few people sort of indicated that I should, so I did. I've received quite a few "reviews" which were more comments like "I like this" or "Can't wait for the next chapter". Well, today I received my first "criticism". The reader pointed out that 1) there's a plot hole in my story. I told her I actually knew that, but another friend who'd read the story said they didn't take it as such, so I kind of ignored it. 2) The reader said that she didn't think that a certain character would act a certain way because of "What he'd been through". While I agreed with her a certain way, like I said to her, a) I don't tend to write canon, and b)all the character has ever said is "You don't know what I've been through!"--nobody really knows, so one can't base how he acted on that. I saw her points in a lot of ways, and while one day I may go back to fix the plot hole--I don't know if I should drastically change my story or not. I mean, I got what the reader meant by her critiques, but...? I don't know if that means I should go back and change everything. I'm just glad that the critique didn't make me freak out like I would have in the past ("My stories are my babies and how dare you say something bad about them!"). LOL--I know, took me long enough to grow up, right? I think that that's one reason I never posted anything on FF.net, though--I was nervous about what people would say. Anyway, anyone else out there write fan fiction? How do you take critiques if you get any?

Thank you, @gregaria888 :) I hope to post more on there, once I'm done with the story I'm doing now. :)

i get all kinds of critic whenever i post a blog or a short story, and for the same story i get many different types of positive and negative, i try to take them all and see what i can do , and what i have missed and what i am good at . i do have some people who are trying to destroy every thing and i ignore them completely but i do have some helping comments and notes that helps me in the next writings, the best thing is not to stop at all . :)

All very true, @Salamanda . :) I think, though, in case of this fan fiction, aside from maybe fixing that plot hole in the future, I'm still going to leave it the way it is. When writing Fan Fictions I, as I understand other folks do, write things that are not "canon". In my case, it's because while I like a show or whatever, I want to see such-and-such character do something differently !

It's not something I've ever tried reading or writing. I haven't written any fiction for years either, but it's something I hope to get back into one day. It's really hard to say how much notice you should take of that review if it's only one person's opinion. It's impossible to please everybody.

That's true, @Gina145--and really, it's just a fan fiction, it's not like I'm trying to emulate Hemmingway or something. I do want to someday correct the plot hole, though. The rest of it I plan to leave the way it is. ;)

Usually I don't get criticisms like that. I get anger for killing off the main character or something (which actually is a ruse and the main turns up alive later) but that's about it. You can fix this without rewriting anything. You address the issue in a flashback chapter, but make sure it is relavant. Perhaps if you already finished it's a prequel chapter or a 'Dream of the Past" afterword. You could even add it as a chapter 2.5 or something. Which shows the event happening, to fill in the hole. Be creative. A story has a lot of flexibility.

I don't think that would work in this story, @OneOfMany , but thank you for the suggestions. :) All are good. :D

@xstitcher Anything is possible in writing! You are the god of the world you write. That makes nothing you do wrong, even if everyone thinks of it that way!
