Have You Felt This Way, Ever ?

Last Sunday , my father-in-law who was doing his rounds of walking as his exercise at the dining room (he recovered from being bedridden a year ago ) , suddenly fell down the floor.
My husband has to lift him up , since he is too heavy .
My father-in-law said his knees suddenly felt weak and folded, that’s why .
I also felt that some years ago , more than thrice . My knees suddenly felt weak and folded , it’s good I always hold on to the jeepney’s railing whenever I alight them .
I have to lose some weight and didn’t felt that way anymore . But still I always hold on to the jeeney’s railings when alighting from it .
And I think , my father-in-law’s knees can’t take much of his weight too now . He has become so fat .
Have you ever felt this sudden weakness of the knees too ? Or maybe it come with getting old ?

i'm glad yer hubs was able to get 'im up 'n hopefully didn't injure 'imself in doin' such. i've'd incidents where such's occurred, though not due to weight issues. my body jest t'weren't absorbin' nutrients proper 'n that weakened my muscles 'n reduced my stamina. since that poor dear was bedridden, he's gonna need to take it slow, use aides if'n needed to prevent himself, 'r others, from gettin' injured.

Yes, I have felt weak in the knees and legs before. I have a bad leg from being shot. When I have cramps, muscle spasms or the cold can cause weakness in the muscle I was shot in. Which leads me to fall. Sometimes I use a cane for support.

But still be careful my friend and don't add more weight anymore . Maybe that weight is still good to carry by your knees .

I think that is something you need to talk to your doctor about. It could be more than just extra weight.

It is indeed for me , because when i lost some weight , i don't experience it anymore . So , father-in-law should lose weight because he is already so fat and with a big belly . His back aches already too. .

@SIMPLYD It is hard to convince people to lose weight, you have to keep trying.

I think it has more to do with our body weight rather than aging.

Extra weight doesn't hlep matters, but the main problem is just that knees take quite a beating over the years, and they get worn out a bit. Even thin people can end up with joint problems. Best to be careful and hold onto railings as you say you do.

I plan to see the rheumatologist that my mother consults . My mother wasn't able to walk for more than two weeks because her knees became so weak . It turned out her knee joints are worn out already . She gave my mom medications which she will take forever i think and she recovered .

I don't think it has too much to do with weight, it's just old, tired, weak muscles and bones.

You also have your point there .
But for me it was a case of having a weight that is over what my knees can take . When i lost weight , i didn't feel it anymore . Though , getting older can also be a big factor too.

I haven't experienced it yet and I wish not to. I'm a bicycle rider and it's a sports for me and I think that has made my knees stronger. When I was 11 years old, I had a knee injury while playing volleyball so running is a no no for me.

It's a good thing your knee injury recovered from that .
Hmm , yes i think cycling makes the knees stronger . I should consider buying an easy rider so i could do it also .

Yes people do tend to become unsteady on their feet as they get older for many reasons.

I have had this thing in my knees before I fell on the bed in 2008. In my case it was arthritis and the loss of fluids in the joints. My knees are still weak and because of that I have been asked not to drive bike, not to climb stairs among other restrictions.
Being overweight can also be a case in your Father In Law's case as at his age, the body calcium production and absorption becomes slow. Does he have a tendency of Osteoporosis? Maybe you should consult some doctors who deal with bones and joints.
If it is only the weight thing, then there are some knee grips (I forget the actual name as was told to me by my doctors back then) - but these are metallic with bands on top and bottom - you wear them - the metal rods share the weight and the bands keep them at place.

wow, it has happened to me occasionally - usually if standing still rather than moving around and yes, I am quite overweight.

Oh good . It means you have healthy knees or don;t have any health problem that can cause that .

Same problem with my mother! She is now 77+.. Her knees have become week to support the weight of the body. This happens with age, particularly among overweight people.
