Some People Just Don't Care Any More

There is a growing trend in Britain for people to wander round shops and streets in bed wear, from pyjamas to nightgowns and slippers. I see quite a few people in supermarkets buying milk which they presumably take to their bedside as they stay in bed all day. Some stores refuse to let such customers in. Today I passed a house where a lady was wandering around in the front garden yelling at her boyfriend or husband. She was wrapped in a towel, dripping wet, having come right from a shower or bath, and oblivious or indifferent that the towel wasn’t exactly covering all areas of modesty. She didn’t look particularly attractive. Have people lost all awareness of the existence of onlookers and passers-by? Arthur Chappell

I can believe it, because I remember that when I lived in France, early in the morning in the street there were several women taking out the dog in their pyjamas or dressing gown. This does not happen here in Switzerland.

@indexer Yes Austria and Germany are pretty similar to Switzerland. This has been my opinion when I have visited those countries.

I love these insights into the social mores of the various countries of Europe! I imagine that Austria might follow the example set by Germany and Switzerland!

I've never actually seen the whole PJ shop run but my particular supermarket hate is topless men or men in vests going shopping. It's just SO unhygienic.

@Fleura I don't want to see topless women either - or people in microshorts or bikini tops. Respect your food - don't flash at it. You do know I'm female, don't you? Why would I want to see topless women?

@boiboing just a little joke since you specifically said you objected to topless men : )

Here in the Philippines , the most that one can do is to go out in their shorts and tees and slippers which has become a fad now specially at the malls . But if that happens here , people would stare at you .

I expect those staggering round in underwear and night wear don't care about being seen or stared at.

@arthurchappell People don't do such things in Latvia. In fact I believe if they walked about like that they would be arrested and brought to the looney bin. I love it that I can walk about in sloppy close in my garden because we have a fence all around and our neighbors don't spy on us but still sloppy clothes not nightgowns or towels.

When I was in the US I was pretty shocked seeing the college students walking around campus in their pajama pants. I see some people wearing them in the supermarkets too. We don't see that very often here.

This makes me a little crazy I feel like the least we can do is get dressed before we go out.

@arthurchappell If the house is on fire, I do think we all get a pass on that one

I was a poll clerk during the General Election in May and was amazed to see a woman coming out to vote in her pyjamas and dressing gown! At least she voted, which most people in that part of Leicester West failed to do!

totally agree. It is good that she chose not to stay in bed - the none voters should forfeit the right to moan about the government they got.

You never know, perhaps she was just on the way to bed and suddenly remembered, at least she made the effort rather than just going to sleep!

Those people really don't care. Have you walked in to a Wal-mart grocery store and see how these people dress?

there are some things that some people wear in public that I simply won't understand. Pyjamas is one of them.

In our area, lots of people roam around the neighborhood in their pajamas and I'm used to it. There are even men who roam around in their underwear only. We can really wonder what happened to them. They are not ashamed to show their bare bodies.

I see this around me so often. I really don't relate to such changes.

You would think, now that almost everyone has phones with cameras and there's the constant risk of photos being plastered all over the internet, that people would be more careful! Personally I hate hanging around in nightwear all day, I feel like a slob and it would get dirty so I'd have to change for bed anyway!
