I find it weird that in the UK, the government still announces proposed planning ideas, licensing changes, parking legislation and requests for compulsory purchase of land by pinning notices to lamp-posts and the walls of various buildings. surely in the age of the internet and social networking such notification methods should be totally obsolete. If you life outside the UK does your country do this too?

Well, the internet is great, but there are so many people who still do not spend much time on it for the purpose of finding information. And the information you are describing would either fall under local news or a government run website, which no one would see. I think sometimes we rely too much on the internet to spread information. I think it is a tool, but not the only tool. Telephones, notices on telephone poles, letters, radio, TV, all are valid means of spreading the word.

We should use those as well but often they are the only way the information is promoted

yes, I think that is the intention though really radical political opponents are wise to it

No, the only notices you see on lamp posts here are notices by unlicensed money lenders and moving truck rentals. But they usually don't stay there very long.

I am assuming it's habit now, I guess, lol, not sure this kind of thing has been done in America for years.

No we don't. Actually it is frowned upon. They would mail notices to you but never on lamp posts. I don't like to see any notices on public buildings or lamp posts.

The wording on such notices is so obtuse that few bother reading them anyway. They almost exist just for the authorities to say they did announce things whilst minimizing protests about road widenings and eviction notices.
