Fake fake pockets

Recently I bought a pair of trousers. They are quite a smart tailored sort of style with turn-up cuffs, with pockets at the sides and at the back – at least that was what I thought until I tried them on, whereupon I found that the pockets at the back were just fake, decorative ones. Never mind, two decent pockets would be a bonus compared to most clothes (women’s clothes so often come without pockets) so I bought them. But when I got them home and had a proper look at them, inside and out, I got another surprise. The fake pockets weren’t fake after all. They were actual real pockets that were very well made, and then after all that work, they had been sewn closed to make them into useless decorative pockets instead! How weird and stupid is that? Fortunately a couple of minutes with a stitch unpicker turned them into useful and attractive pockets once more. But I’m still mystified. This is one of several annoying and stupid things about women’s clothes. There’s a good amusing article about women’s clothes below: I had added a picture of the pockets but for some reason it doesn't appear and when I edit the post there is no option to add it. Can it be that you can add a photo or a link but not both? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2015.
There are a lot of annoying things about being a woman, like periods, childbirth and not being able to play basketball in a way that keeps spectators awake. But near the top of the list has got to be buying clothes.

Oh the things that pass for fashion these days. Why not just have a fake pocket than turn a real one into fake

I've seen several posts about it being not possible to have a link and a photo. Have you never come across sewn-up pockets before? I thought they were quite common, but goodness knows why.

@Fleura I remember complaing to one of my friends once that my new jacket hadn't got proper pockets, and she said - I think you'll find it has. She then proceeded to unpick the stitches! That was years ago.

Really? No I haven't come across them before, I've come across fake ones that are just a placket, but not real ones that are sewn closed.

@jaboUK If @AnjaP is correct they do this to keep the pockets in shape and intend the purchaser to take the stitching out.

I am as perplexed a you are on this. If they waned to manufacture trousers with pockets for decoration then it would have been cheaper to simply add embroidery as you had first suspected. On the other hand, if they were manufacturing trousers with pockets then why go to extra trouble and cost to sew them up?

I wonder whether this is standard practice? Or did the retailer order trousers with pretend pockets and the manufacturers had a run of similar trousers already in the warehouse but with real pockets so they had to sew those up to fulfil the exact order requirements? I guess we'll never know.

@Fleura The nearest that I have known to this was in a jacket that I bought a few years ago. I bought a small imitation leather jacket from Primark with a zip up front, that was perfect for work. I later decided to buy another for use on holidays and travelling, but I noticed at the shop there were 2 zips near the top pockets, one either side. I assumed this to be a couple of pockets, but they turned out to be zips and nothing else.

Oh boy, I always prefer clothes with pockets even if it's a dress. If that happened to me and I realized the problem earlier, I'd have the store "fix" it if they have an alteration station, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. As for the pic and links, yeah that seems to be the case. It's either one or the other.

To me, the fact that they sewed up the pockets is usually a sign that they are a superior quality. This is an extra step usually taken in cases where they don't want the garment to be maimed by people in stores, etc., and generally people do take the stitching out unless they don't intend to use the pockets.

@Fleura Looking at your photo, I see it's a matter of the type of pockets, the slim line inside pocket. Yes, those are usually sewn up, but I don't know if the purpose is for looks or preservation. Usually machine-sewn but not so tight that it can't be pulled out easily .

Are you making that up? If they intended the stitching to be taken out you would think they would just make a few tacks and not tight machining.

I get so annoyed when I realise pockets are fake or sown closed. I do not like to carry a handbag, so like to have functional pockets to put cash in when I go to the store. Probably why I wear denims most of the time.

Maybe it's a ploy to try to get women to buy handbags because they don't have anywhere else to put things!
