I'm Not One for Kitchen Gadget Fads

I'm not one for kitchen gadget fads, especially those infomercial ones, where they advertise that if you buy one you can get one free. If they can afford to do that why not just sell one at a cheaper price. In particular I have an aversion to the nutribullet, or whatever it's called in other countries, that gadget that reduces fruit fibre to an unmentionable coloured liquid. I prefer my smoothies to have some substance. Yesterday, after watching a smoothie demonstration, I decided to make a smoothie. I'd forgotten my blender had died last year and I needed to buy another one. So, with smoothies still on my mind, today I'm off to buy a new blender. My favourite is still a banana smoothie with fruit flavoured yoghurt, especially passionfruit. But I'm rather partial to all fruit and yoghurt smoothies. Yesterday I tried a rather nice almond milk and spices one. That was rather nice. What about you? Do you have a favourite smoothie?

I like to cook, but I still cherish many of the gadgets that were given to me when I got married, over 50 years ago. Many of those "old" gadgets are far better than the new ones. My old Osterizer has one of those motors that could make a car run I like old fashioned smoothies too. And I like them with fruit. For me, veggies mean salads.

I like my old Oster blender also. Must be at least 35 years old.

Good, glad I'm not the only one who likes the tried and tested.

@marlina I haven't heard of that brand. I'm afraid today I won't be buying a very expensive one.

What I do in my old Oster blender is mix some Almond Milk with sliced bananas, add some vanilla (lots) and some sugar substitute. I love it that way.

Unlikely though it may sound, I have never tried a smoothie SAs for the nutribullet, it is a perfect example of the type of gadget that people and rave over for a week or 10 days then consign it to a cupboard because the novelty has worn off.

@valmnz That would not really matter because the company will already have your money.

Exactly! Over priced and under used. What's more, I've heard of several cases where they break down quite quickly.

@crazyhorseladycx yes, I never find the washing much at all. Make it in five seconds, clean it in six .

i've a vitamix 'n the prep is not much. cleanup e'en simpler coz ya jest rinse it out, put a squirt 'f dishwashin' liquid in with 'bout 1 cup 'f water 'n turn it on. cleans itself :) i also like to make extra (ya know, coz i don't measure nothin') 'n freeze the fruit'uns up 's a cold treat.

When I make a smoothie its often a way to use up a too ripe banana. Unsweetened yogurt, almost black banana and the blender: perfect team. Sometimes a spoon of baking cocoa goes in, too.

Now why didn't I think of that! I've just made my first banana smoothie with my new blender, next time I'll try your cocoa idea. Sometimes I add wheat germ to mine as well.

@valmnz Wheat germ and some almond meal or peanut butter is very tasty in a smoothy.

I can't say that I have ever had a smoothie. I am always behind on food trends.

Not sure about being a trend, I've probably been having them for about twenty years.

I hear so much about smoothies here and despite growing my own fruits I have never attempted any of those. I have a blender but it has other uses in my kitchen.

I've never tried a smoothie in my life, and don't possess a blender. I prefer my fruit as it is.

My favorite is pina colada, but strawberry-banana is a good one too. I'd love to try avocado-chocolate next time.

oooh, not heard of a pina colada smoothie, or avocado chocolate. I like both avocado and chocolate, but together? I'm not so sure.

@valmnz Yeah they usually don't put too much chocolate, just a little to give it a chocolatey taste.

I love it, the "unmentionable coloured liquid", hahaha! It really is. I just like to take milk, some protein powder, some raspeberries (frozen) and some cocoa powder. Yum.

So many people don't like their nutribullet I'm surprised they are still able to sell them.

I do like smoothies, but have never made one in my life. My daughter is our smoothie expert - I think hers usually have melon or berries in them.

Like @MALUSE, I also make a dessert with yogurt and quark, it's a kind of cheese pie, but lighter. My favorite smoothie is banana and strawberries.
