Pub Sign Photo Study – The Queens – Hyde, Manchester

There are quite a few pubs called The Queens but most use either one monarchical Queen or playing card queens as an image. This lovely sign from Hyde in Manchester uses a portrait of all six of the wives of Henry 8th, each one very meticulously painted.

Oh wow @arthurchappell you have a disc full? I've always wondered if there were any better paintings then those exaggerated ones out there.

@rebelann I have about 3,000 inn sign photos over about 100 discs so far - I often go round towns looking for them and I am in a society of inn sign enthusiasts too

Very much so, which is why they fascinate me. I got into it when I wanted a photo of one in particular as it was a portrait of a local poet I had written about (Ben Brierley) but it had been removed when the pub shut down. I then noticed how many other signs had vanished and then started noticing the beauty of those still around and realized I had a new obsession.
