Fig and almond tart

I always associate figs with warmer climates, like Greece, Croatia or the Middle East. When I first moved ‘down south’ I was pleasantly surprised to see one or two fig trees in sheltered gardens, but I never saw ripe figs.
Recently though I found that a friend has quite a big fig tree in her garden, and this year it was covered in large ripe (or in some cases overripe) figs!
She gave me a bag full to take home. I ate a few fresh, but there were too many to eat them all in time. I ended up making some of them into a fig and almond tart, which was quite nice although I much prefer my usual version with apples.
How do you eat figs? Do they grow in your part of the world?

I have a fig tree but not the one that one finds in stores. I eat them fresh or make syrup that can be poured on ice cream. I buy the other variety - the dried ones and soak them in sugar syrup as eating becomes easier that way.
