Gun control and all that

We are not going to get rid of guns in the United States. It's difficult even to put more restrictions in place - people fear a slippery slope. This is not a left-right issue either. I'm a leftie liberal and I oppose making gun ownership too difficult. My reasons may be different from my Tea Party neighbor but we both agree that pushing this too hard could even cause a civil war. No sane person wants that. I feel that we need to do something about the mental illness that causes the mass shootings. That's easy to say and no, I don't know WHAT causes it but at least researching that is a goal that can be accomplished politically. My personal opinion is that our heartless and over worked society contributes to this. I think desperate people snap and take out their rage with murder. I think that bullying plays a part. I think.. but never mind - those are just opinions and guesses. We need research. I'd like to see the NRA use some of the money it uses to influence politicians go to support that sort of research. I'd like to see the 2d Amendment crowd in Congress AND the gun control crowd get behind that too.

There aren't enough institutions (or money) to make sure all the crazies in this country get help unfortunately.

That's just a matter of money. And it's not necessarily locking people up - if we knew why, maybe we could help without that.
