Just Received A Bombshell

We have just received the final bill for the extension that we are having build and I was completely thrown to see the the work for the foundations had come in a lot higher than ew expected. We knew it was going to be more than expected as we had to dig deeper due to some tree roots, but silly us only thought it would be the extra cost of the concrete and we forgot everything else that goes with it, muck trucks, labour and the so. To be fair the bill from the builders os fair, it is just so much money and with all these sorts of things we have gone slightly over budget, which is scary s we tried so hard to keep costs down. They say than when you spend money on the right things more money flows back and the extension certainly makes the house a lot nicer to be in, so hopefully it will lead to a nice surprise in the future, heres hoping :-)

Shocking but so many people do this. Here in Tahiti we are part of France so when we give a job bid and tell the person this is what it cost we have to stick with our price. Unless we find something we didn't see before. But here the job bid signature is like a signed contract and that's why many people here over bid or give a much higher price to cover things like this.

I like the idea of the job bid idea as you know the final price in advance, but as you say the bids in those situations are normally higher so they can cover any unforeseen costs.

@mrtoffee Yes you are right. But here we can only add 10% to our cost to cover unforeseen costs. So it doesn't make the bid out of reach. Besides here companies normally ask people they have been referred to. Word of mouth on the islands is like gold in your pocket. The more people talk about you, the better you do the job, then the more gold you have in your pocket.
