Movie discussions Part 1

I have been a big movie fan for over 70 years--going back to the days when you went to the movies and saw a double feature plus a cartoon, plus a newsreel plus coming attractions (maybe, just maybe, if movie houses went back to this they would get more customers)--and never tire of them. I do not buy--I don't rent-- a DVD of a movie until I see it on a movie screen like a movie should be seen first. Even now I go to movie houses a minimum of once a week, generally twice a week.
No way could I pick a favorite movie--would even have a hard time picking 'my favorite 100 movies'!
I tend to see dramas, love stories, 'weepies' (as they were called) over comedies and do not go for most sci-fi, violent and comedy movies. And, yes, I preferred movies of yesteryear where they hinted at sex (fireworks, curtains blowing, horses rearing up, etc.,) then the gratuitous sex they have on the screens today.
I feel most movies today are at least 15-20 minutes too long with the director wanting to show off what he can do instead of concentrating on the story and moving it forward.
And, yes, I am from the old school, when movies were told in 3 acts with a beginning, middle and end in a linear fashion and not so ambiguous as so many are today. I don't mind thinking in a movie but movies were originally attended to escape from the real world, if only for 90 minutes or so. And I LOVE a 'happily ever after' ending.
I love the 'magic' of movies which is why I avoid many of the DVD extras--I don't want to know how something is done--I don't want to know the actor brushed the 'blood' (or what the blood really was!) off after he was shot dead and then got up after the scene was over and went to his trailer. I want to believe the actor is THE person I am watching. Naive? Sure!
Which movies have I seen unaccountable times? What stars draw me to the movie houses? Coming up.
Do YOU still GO TO the movies?

I used to go to the Saturday morning pictures as a kid, when the programme was as you describe. Then when I started dating, the cinema was THE place to go, and not just for the films, if you get my drift
. But now I haven't been for over 40 years, just have no interest.

the days of kissing in the back row are over- nowadays couples go to the movies to text and take selfies

I don't remember what we paid back in the Ice Age!! LOL
I do remember paying 55 cents BEFORE 1 PM to see a movie plus Frank Sinatra with a full orchestra!

@GreatMartin I agree but after living in Vegas and there being bedbugs in the movie theater, I have lost the need to go.

A movie was made to be seen on a 70 foot screen--it was made to be seen with other people--laughing, crying, sighing, being startled--all together!

Seeing a movie on a big screen is really the best. Occasionally we have found an old fashioned movie theater that hasn't been divided into several smaller screens. Those are the ones I like to go to.

Oh thank you--finally someone who --well I don't want to insult anyone so I'll simply say for agreeing with me!!!
I have a 'art' theatre a few blocks from me--it is THAT old fashioned theatre--they even have a place to write your feelings after seeing a movie--it is divided into 4 BIG screens--the lobby has photos of the old stars and movies--just a fun place to go to see a movie--let me see if I can post a picture of it here

I love going to the movies. I can name my favorite: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but the rest of my favorites fluctuate depending upon the mood. I like a good comedy, but the problem is that there aren't many good comedies! nowadays they rely upon this raunchy humor and it's just too much. I can't believe so many people just watch those same inane jokes over and over.

I love going to the movies. I remember as a child going to the Saturday matinee, it was always a cowboy film, one other and a cartoon. My husband was telling me about the time he went to a Saturday Matinee in Guyana. He and his brother were describing what had happened in the film to their mother When his brother punched the air and hit mum square on her nose. That would have been something to see.

I go occasionally. I haven't been to the movies in awhile now. The last movie I saw was Poltergeist, the remade one, with my kids. I honestly did not like it. It did not have the punch that the original one had. I would give the new one a thumbs down. My son has been getting into some of the older movies, back in the 70's and 80's. He is a Rocky fan as well as a Rambo fan. He also like the Back to the Future movies. I like some old time movies every once in awhile. I really enjoy the old James Cagney movies.

@GreatMartin I don't get it either. Some movies are not meant to be remade. That's like someone re-doing the Godfather movies. That would be horrible.

I could never understand why they remake GOOD old movies--take the bad ones and do something with them! LOL

@inertia4 The latest thing is turning movies into Broadway shows--and the results are the same--never as good as the original! :O)

I love movie theatres though I prefer the few small cinemas to the over-priced soul-less multiplexes but sadly those are all we have here

we only have a small theatre here and my one son goes there every Saturday and if he works a Saturday he goes after work. It only costs an adult $6 to watch the movie but of course he buys popcorn and a drink or two.
Only problem being it is a non profit theatre so he never knows what is playing that day. It is also only open on Saturday and Sunday.

@arthurchappell @Marcyaz In 1951 I worked as an usher at the Lyric movie house on Times Square--saw Danny Kaye in "On The Riviera" 3 times a day for 21 days--and got to meet Danny Kaye! :O)

I call it the cinema but yes I still go. In the summer here they have outdoor cinemas and one of my favourite outings was to watch Mama Mia in Greece in the local outdoor cinema. It was so atmospheric sitting in the dark with the moon and stars above me.

Oh come on--say they are too expensive or the crowd is too noisy but don't put down some of the brilliant actors, directors, etc. working hard to entertain billions of people and doing that.

Sorry @cmoneyspinner but watching a movie on a 40" or whatever TV screen is not seeing it on a 70 feet movie screen that it was made for--plus sharing the dark with a bunch of strangers whether it be laughing, crying or however reacting is a BIG part of the movie experience.
