Food Served On A Plank

There is quite rightly a growing backlash in the UK against bars and restaurants serving food on anything but conventional china plates. The wooden block is one I see often, which is frankly stupid as much food can easily spill onto the table and you can’t use much by way of condiment sauce as that would slop off the flat surfaces too. Other restaurants have served food on shovels, in oversized ash-trays, take-away style bucket cartons, toilet shaped novelty bowls and dog food bowls. I will not order sit own to eat at the table food in any facility unwilling to offer me proper plates, dishes and steel cutlery. Bon Apatite. Arthur Chappell

I don't like to be served something like a steak on a plank where the juices can easily run over the edge. To be fair, some 'plank's have gutters rabbetted round the edge but then I would question the hygiene. If something were served to me on a plank, I would send it back and ask them to plate it properly. As to my subsequent behaviour, much would depend on how they handled my request!

I am known to just get up and walk out when it is a question of hygiene.

If I see other meals served in such a way I would just not order food there

I completely agree, I want a proper plate, a clean dish and cutlery, I do not eat in a place where I cannot have all of this. Bon Appetit to you.

I suppose a plank would be fine if you ordered spaghetti because they could serve it straight without needing to curl it to fit the plate.

Over here, some dishes are served wrapped in banana leaves. I do not mind eating it as long as I still have proper forks, spoons or chopsticks to enjoy the food. I think food, especially rice with meat, taste nicer when wrapped in banana leaves.

I have never had anything to eat out of banana leaves and don't think I would want to try it.

I totally agree and I hate it when I have to send the plate or silverward back bacause it is not clean. We are the customer who pay for this and should be served as if we are guests not some jerks coming in for a freebe.

I think that restaurants that serve food on other than normal plates are just trying to be trendy - sadly they fail in my opinion. Like you, I want a proper plate.

I dont mind odd things, IF they work. IE a cast iron skillet for a warm mash, or a metal tray for a burger and fries. You can't clean a wooden block well, I wouldn't want to eat on that at all

@crazyhorseladycx this is happening in ordinary bars - it's not like we have to go out of our way to find somewhere weird to eat in the UK any more

I saw quite a few restaurants serving food on wooden planks that had been presoaked in something or other and were supposed to infuse the food with their woodiness. I just find myself wondering how they get the germs off it.

Really maybe that's their style but I wouldn't eat in those restaurants too.We do use our hands when we eat in restaurants that serves chicken barbecue and the plates are native weaved plates with banana leaves. That's fine with me
