Getting paid for writing verses

Following the period of letter writing my tutor suggested that the next step would be to write 'fillers' for magazines - one liners that editors use to fill up empty spaces when articles are too short to completely fill a page. I met with a complete blank on this, couldn't think of anything witty to write so I cheated a little and sent a poem as my task for that section. To my amazement he wrote back and said it was good enough to send to a card company and then suggested one to try, which I did. The company was well known in England, had lots of chain stores and they sold cards with the kind of verses I wrote. They liked mine and for probably a year or more they would send me details of the kind of 'sentiments' they were short of and I would send them half a dozen to choose from. This arrangement covered the cost of my writing course! I never knew if they actually used them until one day I dropped into the local shop and had a look through some of the cards. I had sold a number of poems about friendship so I looked in that section and found a card with one of my poems on the front entitled 'What is a Friend'. I can't tell you how excited I was! I bought the card and said to the saleswoman, I have to buy this because it has one of my poems'. She looked at me as though I was mad! This came to an end when the company was taken over and the style changed. The editor asked me for verses but they were not suitable for the new style. It was good while it lasted.

Well, that's not a bad start on getting published for your verses. Sorry to hear that it folded. Someone in my local writing group is trying to get his poetry published in a greeting card company, too. Nice tip about fillers.

Do wish him all the best from me and encourage him to keep at it.

That's very interesting as I do a few poems and silly verses. It would be good to find an outlet that pays, just to see if they would be good enough.

You write better than I do Jabo so why not check out a variety of cards and send to some companies that would appreciate your talents. They pay per line, at least that was how it was for me. If you make a strike check out copyright - in my case they bought the poem and then it belonged to them. So I assumed that I lost the copyright.

@41CombedaleRoad I'll bear in mind about the copyright if I ever do go down that route. Thanks.

That sounds like a great experience in writing. I need to find a way to do something like that.

If you can write catchy phrases or verses it might be worth checking out some of the cards being sold in your area. Take a notebook and write down the names of the publishers that seem likely to appreciate your skills. Good luck.

lovely that you were able to do that and make some success of it. Shame the company changed direction.

That must have been satisfying to find your verse in the card.

It was, as only once had I been sent a courtesy card from a card company with one of my verses published by them.
