An Indian company is breaking ground in Detroit, Michigan for a factory that will actively recruit former convicts for many of the 350 jobs it will create. They expect to open the 180,000 square foot, $30 million plant in March. The new plant will supply parts for GM cars. The company builds suspension and steering parts for Ford and General Motors. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said “Everything about this city’s recovery starts with job.”

Well historically Detroit did motorize America. I think Mike has it right. Build jobs or build more prisons, which is better?

@Marcyaz You neighbour thinks the same thing. It has become very much a social issue as well as an economic one. The future a environmental one?

What is it that they say there that people deserve a second change. They made a mistake and paid for it. Now I feel like this is an excellent change for them to prove they are reformed and have learned from their mistakes.

@Marcyaz Everyone makes a mistake some worse than others.I think it's important they all get a second chance to prove themselves and I think this is an excellent way of giving them this chance.

It is good to give a job at a former convict, but I am not sure that it is good to have too many together at the same place.

@TiarasOceanView I am sure it will as I hear a lot of companies won't hire you if you have been convicted of something.

If the convicts are sincere in wanting to make a change for good in their lives, then that is great for them to have a job when they get out of jail.

this is good, some end up back doing shady things because they can't get jobs. I'd like to see more dog trainings like some do, and more chances for them to get trades training, plus good therapy and such

America needs jobs. A lot of people who have been incarcerated, end up going right back in because they cannot compete in the job market with a record.

My feeling is they should have thought of that before becoming a criminal. Yes we do need jobs and especially right now when so many are out of work but to be honest who would you pick someone with a record or a person with no record?

@sherryeb right it all depends on the crime which I believe they said it was for non violent crimes. I have seen them on the roadways picking up trash and mowing the grass.

Depends on the crime they were incarcerated for and whether or not it would be a direct conflict with the job assignment. In our town we have prison workers that work everywhere for the county and do maintenance work at the schools.@Marcyaz

It will do everyone a benefit, and those convicts will get a stable job and new lifestyle. Vocational rehabilitation is one of the best there is.

We have a company in the UK that hires a lot of ex prisoners. It's a fantastic philanthropic strategy that wins them loyal staff and loyal customers and turns lives around forever. I'm a big fan.
