When I walked in a restaurant for lunch a few minutes ago I saw a 'breaking news' item on one of the TVs set to ESPN. It said that J.T. Barrett, the quarterback for Ohio State University (currently the number one college football team in America) has been arrested for DWI (driving while intoxicated).
And he's been suspended!
For a whopping one game.
WHAT is this teaching these kids?
He should be expelled. He is TWENTY years old. The minimum drinking age is 21.
Isn't anyone concerned about that? Of course not. He's the quarterback of a winning football team. The only reason he's being suspended for one game is it's more or less mandated (the university has to do something or the NCAA will step in). Of course, he's being "suspended for two weeks," but this week is a bye week (they don't have a game), so he's only going to miss the game against the 4-3 Minnesota Golden Gophers on November 7.
When are we going to stop coddling these kids and letting them get away with things because they're "star athletes"? If he isn't taught a lesson now he's going to be a repeat offender...and the next time, he might not get caught at a DUI checkpoint, he might actually kill someone while driving drunk.
There are more people killed in the U.S. annually by drunk drivers than by gun violence, but apparently we only take one of these seriously.
