A Haunting Halloween

Rain poured out of the sky. Wind bent trees to their limits. Leaves, once green, now brown, spun through the air. Ghosts, goblins and other creepy creatures prowled up and down the dark streets searching for their just rewards. Terror inched its way from my toes to my head every time the doorbell rang. Would they jump on me and convert me into a goblin? Or would they simply yell, “Trick-or-treat”? None of it happened. Not even the rain and fifty miles an hour wind gusts forecast by the weatherman. We had a few drops of rain here and there, but not the down pour predicted. We had a slight breeze but not the blasts forecasted. If anyone came to my door they were truly ghosts. No one stroll up and down the streets looking for anything. I saw my neighbor, his wife and kids hop into their car and leave. I thought for sure he would let his kids come over. But, no, they did not. My neighborhood reminded me of something ghostly–a ghost town! I did not have even one trick-or-treater. This morning when I saw some teenagers walking down the road I thought about grabbing my candy bowl, dashing to my door, whipping it open and yelling, “You want some candy?” But I thought better. What if they thought I was some creepy old man trying to lure them into my house? I even thought about taking my bowl of candy and going door to door. When someone answered their door I would yell, “Treat-or-trick!” Then tell them that means they needed to take a treat or I’d trick them. But that would be creepy, too. So I guess I just put a bunch of candy in a FoodSaver bag, seal it up and freeze them. That should keep me from pigging out on the candy all at one time. Next year I plan to shut off all my outdoor lights to basically tell everyone that I’m not participating in Halloween. It’s no longer like the old days when everyone in the neighborhood came to your house.

Awww - I just responded to your other post wondering how it went - so now I know! Ah, so the weather did make a difference. Well, that means more for you - so what do you get to pig out on in the next few weeks (can't just pull one out of the freezer)?!

@RichardMeister Ohhh, you got the good stuff! For me, the Snickers would be gone first! I don't think they pass out chocolates at the mall because they don't want a potential mess of melted chocolate in any of the stores or floors. I was just thinking maybe parents thought it would potentially rain harder if they stayed out to trick or treat - yah, at the mall there are less things to deal with.

@much2say The best for me is 3 Musketeers. I know, I've heard it before. It's just a bunch of air. The true is I'm not all that keen about caramel. I'll eat it but it's not my favorite.

I don't think the weather had that much to do with it. There's 2 things I think may have been in play 1. I'm rarely home on Halloween and 2. people have gotten used to going to the mall. Have you ever seen those bags of mini-bite candy at Costco. I can freeze 75% of the bag and still have plenty of each type left to munch on. There are Butterfingers, 3 Musketeers, Snickers, Babe Ruth, Milky Way (both plain and midnight) and Reese's peanut butter cups.

Oh I like that image of you yelling down the street: You want some candy? Such a creep! And trying to be nice. Like the woman in Home Depot who called me Sweetie. Not a clerk just a nicey nice lady who saw a bent over person walking with a blind guy. Being nice. I should have looked her in the face and asked Hon, you want some candy?

Many times when I go to a restaurant the waitress calls me, "Hon," or "Sweetie." So I let my beard grow out and now I look like a mean SOB but they still call me, "Hon"!

@sallypup An old biker dude. Here's the kicker. Yesterday my brother and I took our mother out to dinner. Mom told me I look good with a beard. Maybe that's why they call me, "Hon."
