Have A Nice Day?

How many of you have had this remark - "Have a nice day" 'hurled' at you in a given day? I see that there are some who would just mention it here in myLot. I just want to say that I felt mixed when people just pass this remark in a patronizing manner especially when we have ended up discussing a sensitive issue or topic. Like this morning after talking about the Russian jetliner that went down after takeoff which ended with no survivors, one of the girls just said "Hey everybody, have a nice day." I know we need to always try to look at the bright side of things but I felt that it was a little off and not to mention a little insensitive here. I don't know about you but I felt out of sorts here. How do you see this remark and my reaction here? Am I overreacting?

That's an expression for everybody to have a nice day . It's not to ignore the sadness of the news , in my opinion .

There's a time for such phrases and it was definitely unfit at that time when I had shared such an emotional incident.

Honestly? Yes, I think you are overreacting. The world goes on, keeps turning, and there's no reason on earth why you shouldn't have a nice day regardless.

LoL, I suppose I just did get myself around it especially right after learning that there were young children among the 224 fatalities in that air disaster and that investigators aren't ruling out the possibility of terrorism. My spur of the moment.

@arthurchappell That's the point but I suppose people will still try to defuse using the wrong methods. I just wish sometimes they don't than they do and still hurt people even more.

@artemeis the late evening news here on TV used to always end with a light happy story so after half an hour of war, earthquakes and economic gloom, they'd show something like a rabbit on a surf-board to try to cheer everyone up again. It didn't work.

Burger bar staff at a well known chain used to have to say it to every customer with disciplinary action if they didn't and most said it with increasingly creepy robotic fixed grin sincerity smiles that it started freaking people out so general polite service and common sense was eventually restored

Sure took some profit pinching to get the management to think otherwise and I am for good polite service with common sense anytime.

You are not overreacting, some people do not understand that there are "phrases" that you should avoid in some circumstances. It's a matter of good manners and common sense, something that is missing in our days.

My exact line of thoughts with you here. I simply felt that we should be attentive to details of what is happening around us and be alert since there are feelings in each and everyone of us.

Yes I feel you are overreacting--what's wrong with saying something positive to someone when you are leaving them? I wish all people would smile and say have a nice day whther they or you are leaving--I'll tale all the nice days I can!

It's just that we had just talked over something really disturbing and recovering from it. The last thing you would want is a wrongful spurt.

I'm not sure about the context in which she made the remark but if it was like what you said then it is rather insensitive. I think if we can't say anything nice, it's better to say nothing.

This is the very reason why I always try to come up with the appropriate phrases or words when I'm in such sensitive environment and try not to appear like a "jackass" at the end of the day. I do agree that we may forget our places sometimes but like your golden rule it is so much better to keep quiet.
