Would you want to live "Off Grid"?

I would say that I am making the steps to living off grid - We are making changes to our home and lifestyle so that we are becoming less reliant on the main stream providers of services and trying to provide for ourselves.
We generate 80% of our own electricity - the remaining 20% is the issue with regards to the lack of sun in Britain during the winters, we have our own woodlands so we have a renewable source of fuel for the range - a cooker that also fuels the hot water boiler and central heating.
We grow as much of our own food as we can so we don't rely too much on shops and other producers.
The next thing I would really like to do is to buy an old diesel 4x4 and convert it to run on waste oil from local restaurants.
Would you consider making changes to your lifestyle and going off grid?

If we were 20 years younger and planned to stay in the same house forever(that won't happen!) then solar would have been an option. At our ages we wouldn't live long enough to recoup the cot of the panel. Plus we have cheap electric so we aren't paying through the nose currently.
I guess our septic tank is about as off the grid as I want to be.

I think that would be an interesting thing to do.

I would love to live off the grid. At my age I don't think that I would do very well. I saw on a show about such endeavors that I guy got an old army truck and converted it. Worked fine. My hat is off to you and I hope all your 'off grid' endeavors go well for you.

we are quite crowded here
even with more land though, i do not think i can live off the grid
what you're doing is quite awesome
