The Fat Waiter Warns You Not To Sit With Him!

(WARNING: SOME OF THIS MIGHT MAKE YOU FEEL NAUSEATED!) Let's say that I am the only fat waiter who has done many, if not all, the things listed below (though I know I'm not.) To be honest I don't know if I have the guts (pardon the pun) to write/confess everything but here goes: A fat waiter is going to sweat--even if the dining room is cold the kitchen isn't--and guess where the beads of perspiration will end up on? Not to forget the side towel he will use to wipe the sweat off his brow that he will also use to clean tables, wipe off a spoon, etc. A fat waiter, if he has access to the desserts, and most do dole out the ice cream at least, will swipe his finger in the ice cream, lick it off and, in all probability, without washing the finger do it again. Your portion of food will be a bit smaller than if served by a thin waiter--the fat waiter will eat one of your fries from the pick up station to your table--or a shrimp--or a piece of salami from your antipasto--or pick a piece of pepperoni of the pizza--or eat the wafer that comes with the dessert. The fat waiter (if you don't offer him a piece) will somehow or another get a piece of your birthday cake if not while packing the leftover slices to go then before serving it--many ways to cover the indentation of the part he ate. If you tell the fat waiter to put your leftover food in a doggie bag he will probably take it to the back and eat something from the dish before he packs it--for many reasons I suggest you ask the server (fat or thin) to bring the box/bag to you and you pack it yourself. I once worked in a steak house--Dan Stampler's Steak Joint on Greenwich Avenue in the Village in NYC--where I would collect the prime rib and steak bones plus any meat or fat left on a customer's plate for my dog--you already know I didn't have a dog, didn't you? When I worked at Picciolo's in Miami Beach I would save all the leftover pizza slices and put them into a take out box to bring to my neighbors--funny, they were never home so I had to eat it all! This fat waiter, addicted to food, did many shameful things with food--yours and his--that I won't get into beyond what I have already mentioned except to say breath a sigh of relief that I am now thin and retired! I lost my massive amount of fat when I was working at The Brass Rail in NYC at 47th and 7th in 1967 and I will never forget one of my steady customer's remarks regarding how surprised he was that the portions had gotten bigger and the prices hadn't gone up--if he only knew!

I had never even considered any of this that you mentioned. I do not eat out much, because I am a fussy eater, even though I am an emotional eater, I am very over preparing my own food. Now I think it will be quite a while before I go to a restaurant again.

@wiLLmaH I too always maintain a friendly and empathetic attitude towards the waiting staff because I know they can be vindictive. But as a rule, I just try to be decent towards everyone because I've worked in customer service and know just how trying it can be.

Fat or thin, I have been told never to send anything back to the kitchen, if, for example, the steak is too rare, or if you got onions despite requesting "no onions"... Now I think I might believe...! Have you ever watched Gordon Ramsay's show about nightmare kitchens? Mind-boggling!

@Marilynda1225 He was a footballer before he was a chef... So I would say he's rough on the tv as he is off-screen... Never met him, so just my guess.

Too honest. lol No I am not feeling any nausea. I saw one man lifting something from waste bin which out here stinks so bad that nobody even walks past it, and he was so hungry that he opened that plastic pouch and drank it. It must have been left over from some eatery nearby and thrown in the waste bin. The image still haunts me. But after what you mentioned about ice cream, I would have hesitated to order one. lol. Anyway, I have stopped eating ice creams so I am safe, ain't I? lol

Uh oh, I've been warned. Then there's that skinny waitress who had to cough while carrying your tray of food. Perhaps all food servers should wear surgical masks to protect not just us but also themselves, just think how many parents bring in toddlers with colds and guess who catches it?

My daughter was a waitress for several years and some of the things she said that went on behind closed doors horrified me. After what she told me, I would never ask to have my food taken back to the kitchen for any reason.

@Lushlala So would I. I have heard that some cooks get mad if food is brought back and they spit in the food and other disgusting things that I never knew went on in restaurant kitchens.

Looks like I'll have to do some research if I'm planning on eating at an unfamiliar restaurant. Stakeout the place for a few weeks to determine which nights of the week consist of the thinnest staff and choose one of those nights. Thanks for the tip

What you have narrated is not only funny but it is an eye opener about a FAT waiter serving in a restaurant. When sitting on a restaurant table, we are too engrossed with ourselves, we don't even look at the waiter to check if he is fat or is of more than normal health.. However, your post is like a warning alarm to us. Now, whenever we dine out, we will have to keep a watch on waiter's health and our share of meal to check if everything is fine and we have been served full portion of our dish or something is missing in it. While getting our left over food packed, we will also keep on eye on the waiter, if he has packed everything or there is something fishy, we might need to follow him to packing area to see if he is doing his job honestly. Having said above - I would like you to clarify whether it is a real story of yours which you have shared with us or it is just piece of fiction. Nonetheless one of the excellent posts.

There are both types of restaurants - Waiter serving and Self serving. Best option is to be in self serving, however only few self serving restaurants have seats to sit and eat, otherwise we have to eat standing.

Took me a while to get myself composed. Thanks for the hearty laugh now, I have enough reason not to get into an eatery where the waiter is fat. But wait!!! What if the Chef is overweight.... And they will not allow me to met him before or after I decide to have my food there
