What Is Godzilla?

I love the proper original Godzilla movies, from Japan featuring a man in a rubber suit stomping a cardboard Tokyo flat in its defence against other monsters such as Mothra, the Smog Monster and Mechagodzilla. He even took on King Kong, and lost in the US print, but won the fight in the Japanese cut. Let’s call that one a draw.
But what exactly is Godzilla? He is 900 feet tall and breathes fire so though he is reptilian he is not a dinosaur but surely he is a dragon. That he has a young son, Godzuki, suggests there is a Mrs. Godzilla (Goddesszilla?) about, presuming that Godzilla is the father half of the family of course.

I'd never seen the movies, and sometimes regret that because the way it is portrayed in collective memory, it seems like something I would have enjoyed. I'm not saying that in a way which emplies that it is cheesy, it's just something about the older movies that tends to grab my attention.

the old Godzilla's are fun and seen in sequence he goes from outright monster villain to folk hero saviour as the films progress even though he does as much damage as the evil monsters

one movie recently had him as a sort of avatar to protect earth, only awaking to fight and stop an ancient...creature thingy.

@ArthurChapell I wouldn't mind seeing the entire family out on a picnic. That would be interesting for sure.

The origin of Godzilla is a mutation resulting from the atomic fallout in Hiroshima.
I must confess to being a fan of the old Godzilla films myself. Some of them are so outrageously far fetched that they actually qualify as entertaining.
I cannot remember the name of the last one that I saw, but it involved aliens attacking Earth and releasing all the monsters from Monster Island.
