Borneo in the background

It's 9 :30 and even though I have been up since 5:30, I am just now getting on myLot. I have to be quiet, so as not to startle the gibbons. Behind me, voices whisper amid the incessant hum of a zillion insects. Even the narrator - whose voice was added in the studio after the filming - speaks in hushed tones, his voice radiating calm as in the distance, an elephant trumpets a warning. Yes, I am sitting at my computer in the middle of cold, Autumnal New England, but in the background is Borneo and the sounds of the rain forest. I am actually glad that The Man is so interested in watching documentaries. Honestly, when I sit down during the day to watch television, I generally choose something that is mind-numbingly stupid. I do that on purpose. I want my couch vegetable time to extend to my brain. But when he is watching television, I learn things. I can't see the TV, but I can hear it and I sort of absorb the information through the back of my head or something. So, today I am learning about the rainforest without ever having to step foot in it, without ever being soaked to the skin in the 100% humidity, without being bitten by insects that could swallow a chihuahua whole, and without even having a bad hair day. What's in the background while you myLot? Are you in a quiet corner by yourself? Sitting out in the garden listening to nature? Playing heavy metal music and headbanging?

You have a way of bringing your audience right into the room with you. As for me, I'm in my office, no sound except the hum of the computer.

My computer hum drives me crazy, because sometimes it is playing music that only I can hear.

@Rollo1 Better not start humming to it or the men in the white jackets might come and take you away.

I tend to listen to the radio when I am on the PC or listening to music.

I don't have a radio and my computer can't run too many programs at once, but now and again I will take a youtube trip.

I am in a quiet corner by myself, hubby has moved to work to the library with his new All in One computer. I do not play music or videos because the two rooms are close and I do not want to disturb him. I love to watch documentaries, I do in the evening.

In the evening I like other types of programming, but we sometimes will watch a documentary. Some are more interesting than others.

@Rollo1 I agree, but some are fascinating. I have downloaded some from YouTube and burned on DVD so we can watch them on the TV.

That's a nice bonus -- to learn something while writing here. At least it'll give you ideas on things to write about.

I'm sitting on my couch with nothing going except the space heater. Sometimes I have the radio on, playing classical music. I live alone and I enjoy the quiet. The title of your post reminded me of a song, The Wild Man of Borneo. I love the line "We come to see, but we never come to know."

@Rollo1 Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys were among my favorites in my college days. He eventually attempted to write mystery novels, then ran for governor (as a spoof, I think). He was very good at writing songs that made fun of rednecks.

I am in my office. There is a large window and I can see sunshine, roses and geraniums. Usually it is quiet, but my neighbor is having renovations done, so I hear jackhammers. This too shall pass, and my early morning serenity will return.

Jackhammers do not create the optimal background noise. On the other hand, unlike music, you don't start singing and typing the lyrics instead of what you had planned to write.

@Rollo1 That's funny. No, and since part of my house is between the noise and where I sit, it doesn't even give me a headache.

My husband watches TV all the time, and as I have a laptop I'm in my armchair in front of it. He's usually got the horseracing channel on, or detective shows and I don't mind at all. I can't say that I learn a lot though.

It's nice to be occupied with something else so you don't have to worry about what's on the TV, otherwise you might argue over the remote. We sort of exchnge. When he's on the tv, I am on the computer and when he's at his computer, it's a good time to watch television.

It depends. If I myLot at night, it's usually pretty quiet. During the day, it's either kids' voices or some kids' character talking on TV.

I like the mind numbing tv as well, along with some bad natural disasters and silly shows, just finished season 1 of The Librarian's and loved it.

I think that is the best way to learn about the rain forest, I would not want to be running around three fighting off critters. I like noise inthe back ground too, can't have it to quiet you know.

I don't quiet and I don't mind background noise, but sometimes, if he watches a war movie, it's a bit much.
