Still Lethargic

I took a measly two Gabapentin pills two days ago, and I'm still walking around in a half-asleep fog. I called my doctor and told her how sleepy the medicine was making me (and her reply was, "Keep taking it," as if I haven't hit the Rip Van Winkle 20-year sleep mark yet). I've stopped taking it, needless to say. I'm just hoping for the drowsiness to wear off before it costs me my job.

Your doctor wanted you to stick with the medication but you stopped. I don't know if that was a good idea or not but perhaps your doctor will prescribe medication that won't leave you in a sleepy state.

Disclaimer: it was a VA doctor who prescribed it. Sometimes I don't think they qualify as "real doctors."

I think I'd call your pharmacist and see what they say. A lot of the time they have more experience with prescription medications than the doctors that prescribe them, so they can tell you if the side effect is typical or not. My reaction to Gabapentin was pretty much exactly the opposite. It hyped me up within a few hours of taking the first pill, but the effect lessened within about a week or so. It made me feel foggy as heck, too... I'm not really sure how to describe it, but it kind of felt like the left half of my brain went numb. I had to stop taking it after about a month because of major adverse side effects. Hope you start feeling normal soon. If I recall correctly, it took about a week for me to stop feeling the effects of it after I quit taking it.

Drowsiness is one of the most common side effects of the medication. The doctor and the pharmacists both assured me it would pass; however, I'm a zombie after only two 100-mg capsules. (And that says nothing of the headaches!) I'm not going to run the risk of losing a job I just got two weeks ago because I cannot stay awake, and that says nothing of staying awake and alert while driving!
