Our toaster went up in flames yesterday...., maggs224, was doing some toast, when she went through to the sitting room, to answer the phone... and a couple of minutes later noticed Blue smoke coming through the flat, so had to finish the call.... When maggs got to the kitchen it was full of blue smoke and flames coming out of the toaster.... she pulled the Burning toast out of the toaster and into the sink, then she covered the toaster with a towel, as some bread was stuck in the toaster still burning.... Anyway.... she got everything under control.... we just had to clear the flat of the smoke.... we washed the surfaces and cupboard doors as well, to get rid of the smell, but I could still smell it this morning , so may have to do it again.... Still all is well .... except the toaster of course, which is toast, history, broke and in the bin.... Have you ever had a small fire like that.... ??

No, nothing so serious. To get rid of the bad smell, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on a cookie sheet and place in a the oven. The nice smell will cover the burnt.

@JudyEv I burn toasts time by time in my toaster and I have to mask the bad smell.

This sounds a very good idea. The new smell would be lovely.

That's a good thing that you had not more damage. What kind of toaster are you going to get to replace this one?

Thank goodness that no one was hurt and there wasn't any damage to your kitchen.

Yes thank you Simone, it was fortunate that no one was hurt, or any real damage done either.... it could easily have been a lot worse....

I've never had that happen in the past thirty years, but I was in a couple of small house fires when I was younger and living with my parents. It wasn't from appliances catching on fire though. One time the back of my pajama top caught fire when I was about thirteen as I was making breakfast at the stove. My dad was in the room and put it out for me. Another time, when I'd moved back home after a divorce, I think, I accidentally left the wires from a lamp or clock on the heater units lining the walls, which were electric. That melted the wire and caused a small fire in that part of the house. When I was much younger, my mother took my brother outside to trim his hair and forgot about a skillet she had on the stove with grease in it. With that fire they had to replace a portion of the kitchen. The only one I remember was the one on me. I didn't realize you knew or lived with Maggs. If there is still smoke in the house, if you cut an onion in half and put it on a plate in the kitchen it will absorb all the smoke left in the house.

I've had a frying pan of fat light up once. I carried it carefully but quickly outside.
