Had plans to cycle through the winter but...

Cycling through the Canadian winter is not for the faint of heart but for me it isn't something new. My current job is just on the edge of what I consider close enough to commute (20kms) but mechanical problems have sidelined me until at least the spring. My regular ride is a very cheap bike and the bottom bracket is worn out. I'd replaced the rear wheel which was also worn out but that bottom bracket isn't worth fixing on it. I don't have the tools or the money to fix it. The back up I was going to use turned out to be in worse shape and my oldest sons bike needs repairs too. I'm bummed out about it but have decided to throw in the towel. Over time riding the bike would save money on the transportation budget but by the time I have anything I can ride winter will be on the door step. Winter riding isn't something you start with the band. Have to use the fall to work my way into it. Oh well, I can still write talk about cycling in the mean time.

I hope you can get back in the saddle in time for Spring.

Should be able to buy and install needed parts on my sons bike by spring. I just have to scrape the money together and find a specialized tool I have for the job. Little to expensive to replace the tool if I can't find it.

I hope you can find a suitable bike. When I lived in (cold) Iowa, it was my goal to cycle to work at least one day per month through the Winter. I think I succeeded. But every day would not have been possible. Too much snow. Here in CA, it would not be that hard to do almost every day.

In my experience, I could ride as long as the roads were ploughed. Floundering around in deep snow is just too exhausting. Most people think of the temperature as being the biggest issue but that is something I've always been able to dress for.
