A kitchen experiment

Lots of my cooking starts out or ends as experiments! But today I am trying something that should be basically easy. I love dressing (stuffing) but I can't use the store bought bread cubes since they are loaded with seasonings (which I can't eat). Last year I was able to find a few bags of unseasoned bread cubes, but none this year. I bought a cheap loaf of bread this morning and followed directions I found online to make my own. Very simple really: . Set oven to 250 . Use day old bread (I used fresh and day old would be easier) . Cut bread into cubes . Place on baking sheet . When oven reaches 250 lower to 200 and put the baking sheet in . Bake 10 minutes . Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes . Put bread cubes in a plastic bag until you are ready to use them Since I used 'fresh' bread I had to leave mine in the oven longer than 10 minutes. They are cooling now and I should go put them away soon. I have the rest of the bread sitting open on the counter so hopefully later it won't be so 'fresh' and I can make more bread cubes. Do you make your own bread cubes for stuffing/dressing? Photo is mine

@AbbyGreenhill I have never done it but it looks like a good idea. My diet has changed so much this past year because of health that I will be unable to eat the traditional stuffing. I think I might make and bring my own.

I will only add sauteed celery and mushroom and chicken stock - that's pretty basic and still tastes good and it's easy to digest...let me know if you make it.

Cornbread stuffing is good, too. Sage adds good flavor, too.

When I was growing up my mom always used plain old bread for stuffing and never used anything in a package. She added her own seasonings and it was the best stuffing ever. I bet your cubes will work and your stuffing will be delicious

It will work for what I need and that is to not get a tummy ache from what I can't eat!

We made our annual white bread buy yesterday. I generally won't touch white bread with a 10 foot pole. Hubby tosses the white loaf up on top of the fridge. It will stay there and stale out then when it comes time to make stuffing for the T. turkey he will toast it in the oven- giving a chunk to the pups- then start on adding sage and celery and broth. He is the turkey person each T. day. I'm the pie person.

I think the bread I left laying on the counter is probably dry enough that I could bake it later. A turkey dinner is mostly up to me - except for my husband putting the turkey book in the oven because I've put it in upside down a few times!

The dressing (or stuffing) I make is a cornbread dressing so I don't need bread cubes.

I have never had cornbread stuffing as I'm not much of a cornbread fan.

I remember my mom doing this, back before the easy packaged convenience food. I often add crumbled corn bread to store bought, or anything I have had in the freezer. Since I have all my own seasonings starting with plain bread works just fine. For you it lets you avoid anything that may hurt you, and that is really great.

I don't make my own croutons or stuffing, I am not crazy about this kind of food.

My husband doesn't like it either, but that doesn't stop me from eating it. He might eat one bit just to try it.
