I Blew a Cork!

I’m usually a very calm person. To give you an example when I bought my new manufactured home people asked me if I was excited. My answer was something like, “I’m buying a house, not winning the lottery.” In my opinion there was nothing to get excited about. I still had to pay for the place. It wasn’t like it was being given to me.
It’s the same way when it comes to me blowing a cork. But when I do, I blow steam out of my ears so fast and furious that people a mile away get burnt. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t go around hitting people or starting fights. I mostly just steam until I cool down. Then I can better solve the problems.
But something happened over the weekend that really blasted my jet boosters. It all actually started several months ago. I got an email from a well–known site that connects old school buddies. The email said if I did not want to continue paying for their plus program I needed to go to their site and change my account status from automatic renew to manual. This confused me since I always change my account to manual after the bill is paid so I was left wondering how it got switched.
Since I never click on links in an email like this, I went to my favorites and click on the site. Sure enough it said automatic renewal. I changed it to manual. I also noticed my debit card information wasn’t updated with my new expiration date. That was fine since I had no plans of renewing my plus membership. I had decided that this year I would drop the plus program for two reason. One, everyone I tried to contact on the site basically blew me off, and two, I’m living on a fixed income right now and it is an expense I don’t need.
So now we are up to this weekend. Sunday to be exact. I went on my computer and found the site charged my debit card. And since my bank had to move money from my savings account to cover the charge, I was charged a fee for it. I couldn’t believe it. I went onto the site and found not only was my account changed from manual to automatic renewal, but my debit card information was updated. I realized I should have removed the debt card information altogether. Then I blew my cork. How did they update my card information?
So I immediately emailed the site while my blood was still boiling. I told them I couldn’t believe how dishonest they were and I wanted the charge removed. I got back a form email telling me how to change my account from automatic renewal to manual. It also said there would be no refunds given. You can bet that didn’t make me a happy camper!
The first thing I did this morning was call my bank the minute it opened. I was told to call the site and if that didn’t work then I had to file a dispute with the card company. One good thing that came out of the call was the woman agreed to remove the bank fee for taking the money out of my savings.
I called the site and got a message saying they were closed due to some sort of meeting. Then it stated I could go to the site and find all the information I needed there. That made me a super unhappy camper.
So I went back to the email I got and found I could respond to it. I sent an response back saying I wanted to have the charges taken off my card.
What did I get back? An email saying they appreciated me and offered me three months at half price. At that rate I’d only save nine dollars over the two years they are charging me for. Yeah, half price my behind!
Anyway, the charge is still on my account. I sure hope I don’t have to go through all the rigmarole of disputing it.
You can all come back now. Writing this brought my steaming ears back to normal and my cork is replaced.

I hope so. I went to the Better Business Bureau's website and found the only complaint on bill for the site said they were refund their money but the complaint was mostly about the way they were billed. So that makes me hopeful.

@RichardMeister I wouldn't even bother with the BBB. If they pay their fees they'll look good, if they don't they won't.

@Namelesss The site wasn't accredited with the BBB so I don't think there was any fee for them to pay.

Oh my - your steam is so hot that I can cook some vegetables all the way here!!!
I too do not understand how they got a hold of your updated info . . . in the times that I had a new card, even with the same financial institution, the transaction would not even go through and they would have to ask me for the updated info. That actually sounds kinda scary they were able to get that updated information without you knowing!!
I hope you can still get refunded - that automatic renewal option should be illegal - surely this must happen a lot! I "think" I know what site you may be talking about - I remember having a free account for a year and then they started charging and I didn't want to pay for it. It seemed like no one got on the site after Facebook started (perhaps that's why you felt you were blown off, people just didn't go to this site since Facebook became available) - and Facebook is for free.

@RichardMeister Thank goodness the finally agreed to remove the charge! Hmmm, that does sound like bull - like how would your side switch out of nowhere like that too?!
And how very suspicious that the guy couldn't tell you about how they got your new info!
I have to take some of these "social" comments with a grain of salt. I have a friend who comes off as an uneducated * on FB, but he's not a man of many words as far as writing goes - he just doesn't write like he speaks (I know this because I know him). And there were a couple times that I did reconnect with old male school friends - but their response to me sounded like they thought I was trying to hit on them when I was NOT. It can get a bit awkward online sometimes!!

I got through to them today. They said they would remove the charge. They also claimed there was no way they could switch my account from manual to automatic renewal. I'm sure that was a line of bull. As far as my card information being changed the guy skipped right over that and would not tell me anything about that. I'm sure you are thinking of the right place. You can still have a free account there. As far as being blown off, I was able to make connect with some old school mates but their responses sounded less than welcoming.
I also removed my card information from the site.

I am so sorry this happened..what an annoyance to say the least.
Such dishonesty is so common on many sites.
Also, debit cards are not good to use as they can be hard to dispute charges, credit cards usually get the charges off immediately.

Hey I'm with you on this one, had nearly the same thing happen before. I learned the hard way so now the first thing I do when anyone puts a charge on my card that I absolutely did not approve I cancel the card. If they didn't handle it right the first time I sure as heck am not going to give them a second chance with my money. The bank will also almost always remove a charge IF you notice and report it within the first 24 hours.
