For years, I saw this iconic image on T-shirts, posters and postcards. I thought it had been faked and photoshopped but I recently discovered that it is wonderfully real.
We have all done what Einstein does here – we see a camera pointing at us so we pull funny faces, gurn and stick our tongue out at the camera. We see lots of camera phone images of friends goofing about like this, convinced that they look cool.
It’s refreshing therefore to see the great Relativity scientist clowning around like this – he turns a fairly routine paparazzi shot of himself from 1951 into an instant classic – an ageing genius just having fun, not caring one jot about anything. It’s hard to imagine this as the man who discovered E = MC 2 but here he is – fabulous.

Of course, we all have our various character quirks too I guess.
Einstein liked music and played the violin. He also liked to smoke, but then again most people did in those days too, even Freud the psychologist, and Jung too.
I guess they were smart enough in their own field, but still pretty dumb in others, where they never really thought about what they were doing.
We are all like that too, at times.

yes, the serious side of his work is what matters of course or the photo would be meaningless

Yes, I've seen this photo before. It is an interesting photo of Einstein. He must have had a good sense of humor and most SMART people do, I think.

He had a long tongue it seems. Yes, I also thought that photo had been doctored a bit. Apparently he did have a great sense of humour too.
He said this once:
"Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves. "
