WebTV

Who remembers this? WebTv? Well, for those that don’t remember, WebTv was an awesome invention. From what I know, it was some people that worked for both Apple and Microsoft. They created this awesome little box that brought the entire web right to your TV. When I saw this on TV I fell in love with it. I had bought a Compaq computer, yes, a PC. I know, that’s not me. Anyway my wife at the time had gotten me the WebTv for christmas. And I hooked it right up and enjoyed every second I spent on there. I felt comfortable. I was able to sit on my couch and surf the web. And they had other things as well. Like mail, and email on that worked flawlessly. They also had sites that, at the time, you could go to and create your own website. Awesome. Now, remember, this was sometime in the late 90’s. So the internet was nothing like it is now. I worked through a phone line, not like we have now. The high speed internet connections through our cable companies. It was an experience and one I totally enjoyed. There were many chat rooms as well. You all remember chat rooms, they were popular back then. I enjoyed my WebTv classic and my WebTv Plus boxes for a few good years. That is until I heard that Microsoft had bought them out. I was sick and disappointed. Honestly, I think that’s where Microsoft got the idea for X-Box. I think they took this WebTv, ruined it for us members and users and reformed it into what we all know now as X-Box. But before Microsoft has killed WebTv, they made yet another box, a third box that was able to connect to high speed internet connections. But, it wasn’t long before they pulled the plug on WebTv. That was the end of it right there and then. Like I said, I was sad about this. The funny thing is that I still have both my WebTv classic and Plus boxes. Nice!!! During the time I had my WebTv, there were sites like Geocities and of course Yahoo. Basically new sites at the time. There were a few others. But Yahoo and Geocities were sites that ha email and a place to call home. Nothing like the Yahoo of today. That’ when Yahoo was young and new and actually exciting. But all that was before the hammer fell on WebTv. Sad, very sad. But at this point in time I needed the internet. I had become addicted to it. So, I went on the hunt to buy me a computer. And you guessed it, I got me an iMac. I loved it to death. And still do. I am on my third iMac since then. But, there are times still to this day that I wish WebTv would come back and I can use it again. I know I am wishing for a lost technology. But it was something else. It had a wireless keyboard and a remote which worked as the mouse for the system. It was really an original idea. Again, I think that would still be something that would go over real big even today. I loved how comfortable the screens were. They were not cold like computer screens are. They were warm and welcoming. Well, that’s it. That is my WebTv experience. Unfortunately I did not have any experience with this. I wasn't even sure of what it was.

@mommaj No, anyone could have gotten it. It wasn't a service like TV or cable. It was a set top box that hooked to your TV and connected you your phone line. i think it was extremely innovative. Too bad Apple didn't wind up buying it.

I loved it. You have to remember at the time it came out we didn't have all the god tech stuff we have now. So it was way ahead of it's time.

WebTv was a great invention. Sadly it is gone now. It was way ahead of it's time actually. They had the internet and interactive TV many years before it actually happened. And still to this day, there is no real internet on TV. Not like WebTv had it. That would be the way to go I think.

@changjiangzhibin89 It had to do with competiton and the fact that Microsoft came along and gobbled it up. That indicated to me that they were intimidated by it. So they bought it and killed it.

That's okay. Not everyone heard of it. And now, since it's been gone for many years, I wouldn't expect many to remember. But it was an awesome experience and helped many people have that transformation into computers. My mother started with a WebTv. Now she has a Mac.

Yes I remember WebTV. Though it was pretty neat back then. I enjoyed navigating about on it. A pretty neat invention. Brings back memories.

That it does. And I do miss it now. Even though my Mac is way better, I still miss that personal comfort it gave me.

As I read through this I do remember hearing about WebTV. I didn't know Microsoft killed it and made it into XBox.

I never said Microsoft made it into X-Box, I said I think they might have. Because the interface is somewhat similar. But yes, Microsoft killed a good thing. I wonder where WebTv would have gone if it were left on it's own.

@just4him You can say that again. But this was one technology that I wish was never ruined. It was actually fun and very awesome for it's time. I am sure if it were still around it would be one of the top technologies we have.

@inertia4 That is something we will never know. Companies are good at killing a good thing in the name of progress.

Yep, I had one. Got it in the late 90's. It was my introduction to the great WorldWideWeb. I had a Plus, which was the forerunner of online TV guides, Tivo (only it worked with a VCR -- no DVD then). It was great. I had Tripod accounts and it is how I learned HTML. You had no choice with a Webbie. In fact, I still have my very first Yahoo and Lycos (originally started as mailcity) mail accounts over 15 years later and I still have many of the websites I created with my Webbie.(long since transferred from Tripod).. Remember the newsgroups? You could only access them with a WTV, but they were a community all their own that will never be matched for their camaderie IMO. Ah... memories.

Oh yes, I remember those newsgroups. There were many and I did love going to them. I hung out with my WebTv every single day. That is where I became an internet addict. I miss it now. I still have the boxes, just wish they worked.

I heard of Web TV but never used it - I prefer to see internet and TV as separate entities rather than fusing them into one

I think the TV is the main object in everyones life. I always saw TV and the internet as one. As it should have been. I still believe that they need to marry TV and the internet together. That would be the best experience in the world.

I remember WebTV. We never had one of those but I thought the ideas was very neat. I also remember geocities. I made several websites from geocities and others like angelfire. It's amazing to think that it was only a few short years ago that these things were popular.

I loved it also. It was easy to use, fun, entertaining and most of all, it was like being home. I loved how the screens looked, like I said, they weren't white and cold looking like on a computer. They were more homey. It was just a great invention that I wish was till around.
