Last year my daughter got Elf on a Shelf for her son. They read the book, and he learned that the elf was there to observe, and report his findings to Santa. I don’t think my grandson liked the idea of having that elf spying on him all the time. My daughter overheard him talking to the elf. “Can you really see me elf? You can’t see me, you’re just a toy.” I thought that was pretty smart of him, he was only three. I guess he wasn’t that sure about it though. One day he took that elf off the shelf and stomped him good. He must have been doing something he didn’t want the elf to see. My daughter just kept up the game, and told him the elf had to go to the hospital. Soon he was back on the shelf sporting bandages, a black eye and with his arm in a sling. The elf made it through Christmas, but I don’t think he’s coming back this year.

These elves are quite durable little creatures and can take quite a bit of punishment. This is probably because all their ancestors were cruelly beaten by children, so they evolved into a sturdy resistant species.

@norcal Maybe that explains why he is called ELF. He could have originally been part of a shelf and the front of him was broken off, which would also explain why he is so small now.

Apparently so. That little fellow could take a punch.

@Asylum I guess being made of wood is another reason they are so tough.

Honestly, I don't think the incident had much of a effect on what was under the Christmas tree.

The Elf on the Shelf creeps me out, so I can only imagine how creeped out the kindergartner would be if we had one hanging around here. Your grandson dealt with it pretty much like I'd want to... We have the Reindeer on the Roof, which is considerably cuter than the cursed Elf. I think his job is to take a Christmas wish list to Santa or something... guess we'll find out for sure when we dig our Christmas stuff out of the closet this weekend.

The Elf on a Shelf was not around when my kids were little. I don't think my girl would have adopted it either, but someone gave it to her. Her little man is a bit of a hand full, an independent thinker. He is always a surprise.

He sounds like a smart kid, and I don't blame him for not wanting to be spied on.

It would be an uncomfortable feeling.

So finally all the elf stuff makes some sense.

I'm surprised the child didn't put a hat over him or turn him to face the wall. I'd like to have seen him all patched up

That would have been a better plan, violence is not the answer

Mom should put a camera on the shelf and say that this year they are watching more closely from the North POle via video cam

Oh, I think that camera would have been in big trouble.

That is a cute reaction and totally understandable. I might have tried that Elf on the Shelf if it had been around when my girls were small.
