Camping on the Bodensee

After leaving Bad Säckingen we started looking for a place to spend the night. We ended up at a camping site on the edge of Bodensee (Lake Constance) which had 1100 pitches. We were becoming used to huge campsites although we stayed at some tiny ones as well. The French and Germans were as keen on touring around as we were it seemed. Some of the sites were obviously permanent and had little gardens, even garden sheds and fancy outdoor settings. There was a large supermarket on site together with a very nice upmarket restaurant and a cheaper café. It was a four-star site. The showers and toilets were all spotless which was always a bonus. After tea we walked down to the marina and took photos of the hundreds of yachts. The masts made some lovely patterns against the sky and reflected nicely too. I liked the little coots minding their own business on the lake. I thought the colourful pig at the entry was cute too.

Some lovely shots but the pig just makes me stop and ask "why?" Why a pig with a checkerboard rear?

Who knows? Your guess is as good as mine - and my German wasn't good enough to ask!

Sounds nice! i'd say the oil price drop in the last year will encourage many back onto the roads and to these campsites again. So much to see and do in mainland Europe, a car is all you need.

There is certainly many things to see and do as you say. We need to go back again and see a few of the things we missed.

I guess you are sleeping by now. Lovely pictures thanks. I think it would be great to have a camper van and go on a road trip with Diesel for company. Of course that could only be in the West.

We saw dozens and dozens travelling with their dogs. My friend went to America and on domestic flights there were dogs in the cabin with their owners. Diesel could go east with you surely?

@arthurchappell Such camping would be equally great. We're a bit old for that now and need a few more creature comforts. We saw lots of young people with all their gear on their backs or their bikes - and right up in the mountains too.

This was a really up-market place with just about every facility you could wish for.

Once upon a time when i was much younger, I had a plan to own three homes in lovely locations. I was going to rent them all out 2/3 of the year and live in them when the weather was to my liking (1/3 of each year). The Bodensee was the one of these locations. It is gorgeous. Did you go over and see the island of Mainau? It has a fabulous garden.

@JudyEv If you were near Konstanz, then you were very near this little gem of an island. The gardens were designed by some princess or other who hired very skilled landscapers. The roses were especially delightful.

Wouldn't this just be the ideal? We have a lot of retirees in our area and every winter it seems half the town takes their caravan and heads north to the sun. Many go to the one particular town and spend the winter playing bowls with each other. We didn't get to the island. I've never heard of it. This happened a lot unfortunately.

We were dumbfounded at the number of boats in the marina. It is certainly a big yacht club.

I have seen many people living in a camper in the United States, but there are some camping in France where people stay all the year round. Very nice pictures.

We haven't travelled a lot in West Australia but maybe there are people living permanently in campers here. Glad you liked the pictures.

I stayed at a camp site on Bodensee when I was about 8, for years I didn't realise that it and lake constance were one and the same

Were most people camping in tents? Or campers of some sort?

Mostly caravans, motor-homes, fewer fifth-wheelers. Some were massive. How they got them in and out of places I don't know. Many had bikes on the back to use when they got where they were going. A few were towing a small car. In Australia we saw a big motor-home the other day with a motor bike on a support at the back towing a trailer with a 4WD and a tinny (dinghy) on a rack above the 4WD. He had all bases covered. :)
