OOMA What A Deal

My husband is retired. I haven't worked in about 13 years. I was desperate to get my husband to his retirement before he was too old to enjoy it. He will be 60 next month (whoa). So there were bills I needed to lower to convince him we could make it on his pension. He worked for the State of Illinois for 37 years. One of the bills I needed to lower was our landline phone. We are old school and a landline is something we want as well we do have cell phones. So I did some online research and came to find OOMA. It's a internet phone. And from all accounts I read during my research it's a good one. Highly rated. We have now had it for a bit over 2 years and I have no complaints. Here is how it works. You buy the machine, it costs between 100 and 150 dollars, depending on where you buy it, either from OOMA which is what we did. I have however seen it on Amazon I believe. My picture is of the machine. Hook it to your internet and your electric. Now I am electronics ignorant so there may be one more hook up, but you can go to OOMA webstie and read for yourself. I have heard people with OOMA say their machines have lasted between 10 and 15 years. After your initial payment for the machine your cost is federal taxes per month. This landline is country wide. You can talk for as long as you wish 24/7 for federal taxes. My cost per month is about $4.20. That's it. You will lose your phone however if your internet or your electricity goes out. But that is temporary. So my landline bill went from $70 a month to just over $4 a month. Awesome. Well I tried 3 times to get my photo on here. Looks pretty simple but it won't go. Anyone have any suggestions on how or why my photo won't go. It seems to load but nothing.

I just looked at the website. It says you have to hook it to your home phone. Does that mean I have to keep my landline to use it? Confused.

@Namelesss no just the connection that you would use for your landline. Cancel the other landline you sure don't need 2 of them.

Is it possible you need to resize your photo? Your photo went fine on your other discussion. I have never heard of ooma, but I am locked in for two years with the service I have, and I just moved so it will be close to a full two years. Keep us reminded. When I mention in messages that tagging someone is not going live I am referring to typing @ plus their user name. It should turn blue, they should get a notification that I mentioned them. So, for technical issues @myLotBugs should get you a response. If you have a question about what is allowed you would contact @GoAskAlex_Admin There sometimes are glitches here, but if you want to talk to someone that usually works.

That is a nice price to pay. I would still have to pay for our internet bill which is actually on a bundle with our phone. If we cut the phone out the internet bill would go up.

My internet bill was separate so we saved by doing this.

Glad you could get the bills down. I am looking at ways to save money but really all I have right now is my cellphone, internet, car insurance, gas, repairs, and monthly rent. I am looking for another job as of right now I am working part time but there isn't many jobs out there.

Jobs are very hard to come by. I like that I'm not paying out the nose for my landline, as I do want a landline not just the cell phone.

We bought a whole house phone system from Verizon for $50 and our monthly bill is $20. Excellent service, never a problem. We quite work and moved south when I was 53 and we paid off two homes, two vehicles and all credit card debt my husband's kids had run up. 'retiring" debt free is the only way to go.

@fishtiger58 A little gadget you plus into your home line and it turns all the jacks into a whole house phone - no more AT&T.

Debt free is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Never heard of a whole house phone system, but 20 bucks a month is fantastic.

What a great saving with that internet phone. I will look into it but I've never heard of it before and don't know if its available for Canada. And we cross the border with our phone (friends and relatives) on a regular basis so that might not work. I had to make my photos smaller to post them here. I don't know the numbers but I know someone here will know. Mine are hi res and I cut them in half and they show up.

@PainsOnSlate yup I had forgotten about downsizing my photos, I do feel stupid but I'm old and forgetful. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The image is probably too large. There is a limit to the size but I am not certain what the limit is. The easy way is to open it in any image editor and reduce the overall dimensions.

@fishtiger58 There is a similar issue with animated avatars. They will always display animated on the profile page, but if they are above 60 X 60 pixels they will not animate in a discussion. This perplexed a lot of members in the old days.

Your photo is up and I am looking at it right now of the Ooma. I had our landline turned off when we moved to this State and since everyone has cell phones we don't need a landline any longer. Hoping your husband gets to retire and enjoy staying home.

I do not use landline. All of us have cellphones, and I do not use smartphone, so my personal cell phone bill is kept to a very low rate.

I love a landline, I am old school. While I have a cell phone I still love the landline in my home. I'm not even sure OOMA is available in Singapore.
