What To Do With Ripped Up Money?

Have you ever come across money notes that have been ripped or torn apart? If so would it be okay to use it still if we were to just tape it back up with some sellotape? As long as the queen area (in British pound notes) is visible and intact I am sure it is still usable right? I was just wondering in case I come across one that is torn up or in pieces!

@Mike197602 LOL I never knew that either, so hope it works when you try and go and get replacement from the bank.

As long as you have each part of the note then taping it back together is fine. Of course if the damage is quite extensive then it is prudent to take it to the bank, where they should happily exchange it for another.

@gudheart I remember someone trying to pass a partial note to me many years ago, which naturally I declined. If he had given me both halves I would have gladly accepted the note.

here in the USA you can take torn bills to your bank in exchange for whole ones.

Damaged or not this post got me to consider if any money actually did get tossed out or lost to the wind and if so how much of it was discarded. I know the banks eventually get money destroyed but a new bill replaces the old.

@gudheart I was actually in a government building and watched people take paper money, record the series number, punch holes in them and then place them in piles to be burned.

Oh it hurts my heart to think of all the money that got thrown away because of a slight torn

I believe that we cannot put sellotape on thorn banknotes, but we can bring them to the bank and ask for an exchange.

You know those self service tills in supermarkets??...i put a £10 note in and it wouldnt seem to take it so i went to pull it out again and then it decided to try to take it at the same time as i was pulling it out. ripped a strip off the side. ive had it in my wallet for the past year as i dont know what to do with it think i will try and tape it up and see if the till willtakeit like that. ive no clue what the actual rules are.

lots of torn bills believe me if you are living in a hot humid tropical country like mine where the only seasons are wet and dry seasons. We just bring them to the bank but expect a little frown from the teller, i do not know but it's like extra work for them Perhaps they should change it to plastic.

Well back in my hometown I use to tape them. No problems so far. I don't know with first world countries though.

In the US there are rules about how much of the bill has to be in tact but with all the pieces I think it can even be taped back together.

We just give it back to the bank and get our money replaced. Once our pup tore up a few currency notes my husband left on a low table.. We put the pieces together on cling wrap and gave it to the bank and had our money replaced.

Our grand-dog ate part of a $5.00 bill, I took it to the bank and they replaced it.

If you try and lose then it isn't your fault. But if you don't try and we lose, then it's all your fault.
