The mouse that couldn't wait to die

I write a lot about mice because as the weather gets colder, they seem to think there's a big VACANCY sign over our house. In the last week or so we had six of them caught in the traps I set out.
Usually mice avoid coming out of hiding while we are around. They emerge after the lights are out and we've gone up to bed. But the last one couldn't wait. I had set the trap in the kitchen, which is adjacent to the den where my wife was watching TV. It was probably about 8pm when she heard the snap of the trap.
Of course that makes it all worse. It's bad enough having to do away with the cute little critters. Hearing the trap snap on them is pretty traumatic.

Yes, at this point traps seem like my best option. But I wish it could be otherwise.

@RonElFran I do know how you feel. We have rabbits burrowing under a shed in several different places. We've blocked the holes with stones but they keep going under. Now we've buried netting round the bottom of the shed. I know some are trapped in there but there is no way of persuading them to come out. C'est la vie I'm afraid.

Yes, I'd imagine that in Wisconsin it won't be long before some of them want to share the warmth of your home with you.

@RonElFran They've already done so. We found dog food in strange places a few days ago when my son rearranged his room. The night before his hood on his hoodie was full of dog food.

Yes, the intruders must be evicted. But still, I wish there was another way than traps.

I've seen a cat play with a mouse, but she didn't turn it loose. She finally ate it, only to later throw it back up. I guess the mouse got its revenge.

I hear ya. We don't usually have to worry about them but extreme cold or wet conditions will drive them inside. I feel sorry for the little critters but...

Yes, the poor things have no idea how dangerous their presence in the house is to us. They have to go.
