I thought that I understood computers until now

Yesterday I offered to resize an avatar for a Mylot member so that it would animate on the discussion page. This should have been a two minute job, but not this time.
I downloaded the original image from her profile page, resized it and tried it on my own profile to check it. Everything was fine so I reverted to my previous avatar and went to upload the resized image to my own web space so that I could provide a link fort her to download it.
It is several years since I used FTP, but still know exactly what to do. I accessed the ftp address, but could not open it in the browser. Apparently Microsoft Edge does not support this feature, so I opened Internet Explorer to try again. Still no success, so I wondered if the feature had been removed from Windows 10.
Undeterred I decided to create a new network location on my C: drive. After creating the FTP and access settings the configuration still returned “Cannot open this page”. I wondered if the access codes had been changed and tried to log into my Plus Net account to confirm this, but the site could not be opened.
I tried several times via different routes over a couple of hours and everything pointed to the Plus Net servers being offline, yet I could still use Mylot.
Not only do I fail to understand how my ISP can be down and still be able to use the internet, but I actually know it is not possible.

Apparently not Anna. Windows 10 was responsible for my first hurdle because it is packaged with Microsoft Edge and does have the feature. As it is the remainder of the issue does not apply today.
This morning I created a new network location and had no problems at all with it. Just a two minute setup and it opens the folder allowing me to drag and drop files direct to my web space. This suggests that my network locations created yesterday were correct, but the site was not accessible.

So, you still didn't know what was wrong, but it is just working fine now?
I always don't understand computers, though I have been using them for years.
I wonder if you are the one who helped me to make my avatar be animated as well.
Many years ago, my mylot avatar was not animated, and a very kind mylotter offered his help and made the little angel nodding her head. Now whenever my little girl saw my mylot avatar, she'd say mummy is nodding her head, and she likes it very much.

The FTP should have worked yesterday, but despite my trying several approaches it was totally futile. This morning I created a folder to open the site and it worked immediately, which is very odd.
As for your avatar, this is quite possibly true. In the early days here I encountered many discussions by members who could not understand why their avatar was animated on their profile but not in their discussions or comments, so I wrote a discussion offering to resize them for anyone who required assistance.
This was a simple task for me, so it would have been wrong to allow others to struggle.

it's all rather an alien language to me as only use FTP to launch my own website updates

That was precisely what I was doing because it seemed convenient to upload the amended file to my own website so that it could be downloaded directly from there.
At least it worked fine the following morning, so I created a direct folder so that I can simply drag and drop files into the folder and they will transfer to my website.i

@arthurchappell That would make no difference Arthur because my problem was the lack of access.

When I had my first computer workshop eons ago, I was stuck and asked the instructor what to do. Not only did it not work for me, but when he came over to help, he could not get it to cooperate with him either. That was when I realized how complicated these things really are.

@ElizabethWallace As we both know from experience, if something odd is going to happen it will do so at the most inconvenient time.

Sounds like you got it all worked out. The ISP I am with is always trying to sell me their services and protections, etc., and yet, half the time their own website is down or has inconvenient and incorrect redirect loops that don't go through and leave you hanging. Why would I trust them to protect my PC?

Perhaps in the future when encountering similar problems with temporary glitches, it would just be easier to attach the image to an email.

@LaDeBoheme Yes, it is really frustrating when you know that you are doing something correctly but not getting the results.
This morning I created a network location within 2 minutes and everything works perfectly.

@Asylum You would have to send her a private message and ask for her email address. Either that or message her that you will temporarily put it in your profile again, so she can download it.
But glad everything worked out anyway ... finally. It is very frustrating when something on the computer just won't do what it's supposed to do because of a glitch!

Animate? Like your profile picture? I remember years ago some people would have animated pictures, but I didn't know there was more to it than just upload a picture. I guess I won't consider that.

Your avatar is fine. The problem I had was placing the avatar on my website so that it could be simply copied from the page. I know exactly how to do this, but yesterday nothing worked despite me using a few different ways to transfer it.

@BelleStarr A photograph is easier to adapt to an avatar because it is static and can be easy resized if need be in any image editor. An animated avatar is a little more difficult because it has to be within 60 X 60 pixels in order to animate in a discussion and requires specific software to resize it.
This was the reason that I offered to help because it takes only a minute for me to correct it.

Computers like humans make errors and sometime, more often than not, there are no real answers.

Sorry but you lost me after resizing the page. I'm a total moron when it comes to computers and how they work.

@fishtiger58 Knowing nothing about computers does not qualify as stupid by any means. I cannot speak Russian, but little children in Russia can, simply because they had reason to learn it.

I have to admit that this is not the kind of procedure that many users will have encountered before because very few would require FTP these days. Most people use services that will create a website for you and therefore simply follow their instructions.

The FTP is not popular nowadays, cloud storage is prevailing.

So, just by resizing the image file can make it animated? make it smaller size?
