I have been a slacker on myLot for several days. And I wish I could say that I accomplished great things in my time away from the computer. Sadly, I haven't done much. But I did manage to fix the button on my tablet. The power button was not working, not turning the screen off and and on the only way I had to retrieve the on screen and get into the tablet was to keep plugging in the charger to make it appear. But the other day, my tablet slipped off the chair and I grabbed it by the corner to keep it from falling. The same corner at which the button resides. And I heard a click. I pressed the button and it worked. Then it didn't, not again. But it gave me an idea. I simply squeezed the top right corner of the tablet over and over with my fingers, pressing the front and back together several times. And the button started working again. My working theory is that the tablet got dropped and something loosened, but I was able to re-establish the connection somehow. And I now touch the button very gingerly, because I don't know how much pressure might undo the magic. Did you ever fix something by mistake, accident or luck and still feel brilliant and special?

I am more of a 'break it' person than a fix it person!

I am always looking for new ways to fix things with a couple of paperclips and duct tape.

@Rollo1 Good old duct tape. Where would we be without it? @AbbyGreenhill I didn't know you could get it in colours. That's pretty cool.

I've discovered a few short cuts on the computer by accident. The trouble is remembering them.

I know what you mean. It's like recipes. I try to remember what I did last time that turned out so nice, and cannot.

@Dragonairy1 I mentioned somewhere else that what folks like you need is a false keyboard for the cat so you can both type away.

Good you have found a way to make your tablet work. I haven't done this since the day of the radio.. when I used to give it a knock to get it working.

my phone works better if I hit it against the table, etc.

Its a great thing that you realized that grabbing it in that location was the 'fix". I have had things go wonky like that and had fixes for them that I didn't realize. The screen on my laptop is starting to go, but nothing significant has happened to bring this on, just age I think.

Laptop screens can be a problem when they go, hope yours holds out for a while for you.

@Rollo1 I am preparing to purchase a new one in the new year. This one is going on 5 years old, so we've had our money's worth out of it.

I cannot remember if it happened that I fixed something by mistake, it's more possible that I broke something.

Sometimes if you just fool around with something you can fix it by accident. But it's hard to do the same fix twice since you don't know what you did that worked.

@Rollo1 This is so true, it's just like when you fix Windows, but you have no idea what was wrong and what you did exactly to make the system work.

I've been doing it for almost 30 years at work. I'm hoping to get through another 5 years or so to retirement without being found out!!!

Chances are, you are the only one who can fix things by accident, and that's a skill they will have trouble replacing. You are probably safe and your job secure.

@Rollo1 I never thought of it that way. Didn't some famous historical leader say something along the lines of it's better to be a lucky General than a good one??

Part laziness, part painful, part computer being so loud and the heat from it on these warm days. But it's silly to pass up money by not being here, so I need to get back in the swing.

Usually, I fix things with bits of cardboard, rope or twine and duct tape. I am more like MacGuyver. But that's mainly due to not having the resources to buy the right things to fix things with.

Something like that happened this morning with the Christmas lights. We gave up tightening bulbs and took the whole unlit string of lights off the tree. Then I plugged them in once more and they worked. Went through this with two sets. bleah! One set is on the tree and lit up now, but who knows why?

It sounds as though the button had been disturbed and was not making adequate contact before. I am glad that it is now operating, albeit as little precariously.

I think that is what happened. It wasn't broken, just not making the connection. Now I touch it quite gingerly and I still won't turn the tablet off. I just have to keep recharging it more often. But it works fine in all other ways. I may look for a rubber casing for it. The book cover type cases don't work well for me.

I was trying to set up a new television converter (a box that uses a connection to cables, and can bring new channels to the TV, using a special smart card). The TV was old and used an antenna. I had a lucky guess to connect the antenna instead of the HDMI connection. I had almost lost hope before I thought about it

Serendipity is a wonderful thing. Fleming discovers penicillin, you discover how to turn your tablet back on...no wonder it's said that it is better to be lucky than smart. And it's better still to be both.

Isn't it wonderful when you can do this. I love trying to figure out why something doesn't work or it's broken. I guess I have a lot of luck on this one because this is what I do for a living. Congrats on your wonderful discovery and how you got it to work again.

I wish I could say yes, however, such is not the case. I'm glad you got your tablet working again.
