Last year, right before I left on vacation to Virginia, my computer decided to act up. It was a hardware issue not software. I brought it to the computer shot then and he couldn't fix it right away so I just went and bought a new laptop.
Today I decided to have it checked again. I dropped it off this morning and just got a call. It is a frayed wire to the screen and it will cost me $90. I think that is worth spending since my laptop was only 2 years old. I like ti because it has all my pictures and documents on it and it has WIndows 7 which I prefer.

It is $65 per hour for service with a minimum charge of one hour. So I knew going in that the charge would be high. It is a $600 laptop so I think worth fixing.

@BelleStarr That is the problem, the repair shop are also aware of the cost of a laptop and know that they can afford to charge unrealistic prices. It any of my personal friends have issues with their computer they usually bring it to me. Paying for a component instead of paying extortionate service charges makes a serious difference. If they bring old computers I often already have spare components, which saves them paying any money at all.

@Asylum lol it was the $1,000 flight and the $500 rental car that kept me from running to you immediately!!

I wish Windows would stop changing things or at least would allow us to choose what version they put in new units, they give me things I don't want or need.

@BelleStarr I agree, I do not know why we could not install an old system only because a new one is out. I loved my old Windows XP much more that all the other systems that have followed.

If it has all your pictures and is more pleasant to work with, then it is worth it to get it fixed @BelleStarr . I hope you can get it fixed soon. :-)

I have my photos copied on every one of my 5 laptops and my desk top and memory sticks, I am OCD about them.

I think it will be better to just get the new wire if it's only $90, I suppose it's much more expensive if you'd buy a new laptop. I like Windows 7 too. Now I am wondering if I should upgrade my Windows to 10.
Hope your laptop will work fine again!

@BelleStarr That makes all the difference in the world. I feel that way about my computer now. It's about 6 years old and it's slowing down but I will probably keep it until it bites the dust because I enjoy it so much.

I was thinking, $90 to reattach a wire? But when you think of the time to diagnose the problem, the actual time to fix it, and then the time to test and make sure the fix works, not to mention the many, many hours required to acquire the expertise to know what to do in the first place, maybe that charge is not so out of line as it might at first appear.

No and as it turns out he is replacing the wire. It is a common problem in this model he says.

Did you take it to the same repair shop? Sometimes getting a second opinion is worthwhile. The cost of repair vs purchasing a new one can be great. I am happy for you that it cost so little to repair it and that it could indeed be saved.

No I didn't I think in this area the $65 an hour is pretty standard and he gets a good BBB rating.

I spent over $500 on my Acer which I did buy to replace it. Having more than one I figure is a good thing.
