How Do You Feel About Caging Wild Animals?

I used to love visiting zoos. I loved watching the lions majestically wandering around their cages. The giraffes with their long necks gracefully reaching for the highest leaf on the tree would fascinate me.
Until I starting growing up I never thought about how those animals felt about living in captivity. I began reading and studying about the effects of wild animals living in captivity.
Do you know that a lion pacing back and forth in a cage is not just pacing it is showing a form of depression. A lion needs to have miles of space to run and hunt. It is in it's nature.
I do understand that there are places set up to study the nature of the animals but they tend to, mostly place them in an area that is too small to meet the needs of the animal.
My understanding is that most of these animals are depressed. I hadn't given the thought about animals being depressed before this. How would you feel if they put you in a small room that you could never leave?
I was just wondering how other people feel about this.

I think zoos only have value in preserving endangered species. The last time I went to a zoo I saw a polar bear pacing. It looked all wrong to me. I only went once to see dolphins in captivity and I was close to tears all the time.

@41CombedaleRoad I wonder how much information they can gain by studying endangered animals in captivity.

I feel much like you do. In our zoo, the enclosures are very natural-looking but the animals are still quite restricted. You can apply this to anything though. The horses at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna never get the chance to really gallop through a field once they've been chosen as a performance horse.

@HazySue I used to love watching three-day eventing, dressage etc but nowadays the courses are so difficult (eventing) and even before they start their test (dressage) the horses can be in a lather of sweat. I'm not so keen on it any more. There is a lot of stress on the horses.
