Man Do I Hate To Return Anything

For Christmas we bought the family’s son a nice MP3 player that had a video screen that he could watch a few of his kid’s film on. We found this the day we went shopping. The little guy was so excited to open this gift. You’d think that we gave him a million dollar gift. But the disappointment set in when we tried to charge this for him and load some films on it. The MP3 player wouldn’t charge or even hook up to a computer. We promised him we would get him a new one, but he would have to wait until today. What a joke this one was. I took off to Carrefour here on the islands. This is the only large market they have. I know it isn’t that big of a deal to change this for a new one. Well I was totally wrong about this. I went to the exchange counter and was told I had to go to the Media Center where I bought it. Once the person said wow we need to test it. Now the guys comes out and say no, you need to take it out of the store and down to the end to another place called Service After Sales Media Nui. Now here we go out of the store to find this place called Media Nui. The guys in there were nice and asked me for the store’s guarantee. They never bothered to give us one when we bought it on Monday. Well anyhow after testing, playing, and working with this MP3 player they decided to give me a voucher to take back to the store. Once I got back there I had to go back to the service counter. They had to give me another voucher. Wow what a hassle just to exchange this for a new one. Now the best part of my ordeal. There isn’t anymore. I know how disappointed this little guy will be because he was so excited to have this to see his films on. Now what? I decided to get him a small 7” tablet so he could see his films on this one. We paid a good price for the MP3 player and I was totally disappointed when the little guy took it out of the box. This thing was light weight and it had a switch on it that would not stay on or off. In order words it was cheap crap and not worth what we paid for it. I added the 20 dollars to this and got the tablet. I know at least this one is better because I played with it in the store. I’ve always hated to go to the market and return anything. I think this has to do with the time I was growing up. My mom is the return queen of all times. No matter what she buys and uses she can find some reason to return it to the market. It seems that just before the warranty period is up she has it back in the box and off to the store. I use to get so mad having to go to the market with her to return all this stuff. I knew it was working but she wasn’t happy with it. Well why not return it brand new instead of using for 11 months and then find some stupid reason to return it. I never understood this one. Here is my return policy – No Returns I hate to go and return anything. But considering this was brand new and came out of the box broken I made an exception today. But after the hassle I had to go through I now know why I hate to go and return anything. How do you feel about returning items to the store? Image source – Store front Faa’a Tahiti personal image

I hate making refunds too especially if the store gives you a hard time. I even had a hard time with a price adjustment.. I made a purchase and a week later, the store had a sale on the item I bought. Since I was already going to go to the mall, I mind as well stop and get back $15+tax back... and keep in mind: store allows 14 day price adjustment if found cheaper or 30 day refund for money back. The cashier told me, normally they will not do price adjustment like this which made no sense because the store policy says so. Basically she was giving me a hard time and I told her hey, if you want I will just refund and re-purchase for the sale price, same thing... Some people have no sense! In the end, I am glad you got the tablet for the boy!

@poehere The store reminds me of Frys Electronics, an American retailer that sells software, electronics, appliances, computer hardware, etc. They make the return hassle very complicating. You walk in the door, make your refund then they give you a piece of paper and you have to walk to the other side of the store (toward the check out) and that is where you get your money back.... That way from the front door to the check out, in hopes you will purchase something along the way I believe is their marketing strategy. But for me... that means I will never step foot in the store again!! That was the worse refund I had to do, such a hassle!

Yes me too. It was a hassle to do this one but I was determined to get it done. I followed their circle around the store and out the door and back in to do this. Was sort of annoyed with all of this mess. But this was new and this little guy was so excited we got him a Christmas present. I had to get him something he could use.

@poehere Let hope it doesn't break again, I'm not one for taking things back, so dislike doing it.

@kevin1877uk Well if it does it will be up to his parent's to take it back. We will not be here when this one happens. I will give all the paper work to his mom and she can handle it next time this one happens.

Yah like this brand new out of the box broken. I will go and return this. But I think in all of my life this is only the 5th time I have ever gone and returned anything. I am not a big person on this return thing plus here you don't get a long guarantee and they only give us 3 or 6 months. So if it breaks after this time you are out of luck and need to buy again.

I would have become quite annoyed after the second attempt to pass me on elsewhere and may even have been so angry as to say " Ooh, I am not happy".

@poehere If you go to buy something they do not pass you on from store to store because they would simply lose a customer, so this is inexcusable.

@Asylum Hey you should come here and see. There is no way to pass us on from store to store because there is only 1 here. No where else to go.

You had quite an ordeal there didn't you. At least at Walmart they don't give you the run around!

@AbbyGreenhill I'm not sure a few other markets made it here and lasted only a few short years. They were gone quickly and now their building are sitting empty because no other large stores are there to fill them up.

I'm not sure Walmart will ever make it to the South Pacific. if it did I am sure that the store would be empty most of the time because of all the great deals and no hassle return policy of the store. But for now all we have is Carrefour and this is where we will shop. It is a large European chain that is here on the islands. I think on Tahiti we have 3 of them in various locations on the islands and people normally shop there.

No it isn't. I still can't see why my mom got such a pleasure out of returning all that stuff over the years. I hate to do it and I can see how anyone would want to do this one either.

Isn't it a major pain. But this was brand new and it was for a child. So I had to go and get him a new one. He was so excited to get this gift from all of us that I felt disappointed when it came broken. Plus it was rather cheap and a piece of crap when we opened it up. I thought for the price we paid for this it would of been a lot nicer. Well anyhow we gave him the tablet last night when we went in for dinner and he was so happy to get this instead. His parent's told me I should of taken the same thing for him. I explained there wasn't anymore and the other ones were too cheap looking. They were fine with this and happy we did this for him.

@RichardMeister Excellent but we don't have one here on the islands. So kind of hard to do this one.

@poehere Returning stuff is a real pain in the behind. The easiest place to return something around here is Costco. You have to be a member so they keep a record of everything you buy. If you don't have a receipt they just look it up to see if you bought the item there (or though them online) then refund your money.

Here I feel it is worse than in the US to do a return. I did one time return something that I bought the kids that wasn't right. They took it back so easily that it wasn't that hard at all. but here it is a royal pain to return anything here on the islands.

Ugh! What an ordeal. I do my business online. I had to send back four articles of clothes because I sent for the wrong sizes. I thought: "Gheez! What a hassle this will be." But, it wasn't. I found the right sized UPS envelope type containers and, using the return labels I sent them back. Order ed a pick up through UPS and they were on their way. Only hang up was that it seemed to take a long time to get them there and credited to my account. But, all is well and I will do so again with now qualms if need be.

Now this sounds a lot easier than what I had to go through. Well all in all will see later on how he likes what we got him now.

Someone here wants me to go to the shop and get that dress exchanged. Worst is that it has already been 15+ days that the purchase was done. I am somehow in complete disagreement. When you purchase a dress kind of thing for someone else, there is a margin in case the size does not fit or even the color of the dress is not of choice. But 15 days is way too much. I have been delaying it further... and do hope that I am not asked to go and get it exchanged.

I hate returning things as well. Usually I'll do it if something is just so useless, or broken, that it can't be used. I try to go right when the store opens so that the line is less if I can.

Well this came out of the package broken so I had to return it. I waited until around 2 to go and exchange it. I know by that time most people are done in the store and it isn't so busy.

Me too. This is the last thing that I will do. Last year one of the small video games I got would not show the image. I was not returning it. I took it apart and reconnected the lose wire in it and it worked just fine and it is still working now.

i despise dealing with returns. we had one return at target & i made my hubby do it. :-)

That one is funny. I did it because the guys were busy and I have one person helping me now. We were just waiting for the drives to finish up and so I ran to the store to exchange this for the little boy. I know how much he wanted this yesterday so I wanted to make sure I got it done today so he didn't have to wait until Monday. I know he will be happy but what a mess to do this one. Never had to run around like this one before. But it is done now and we tested it here. We are charging it and will put a few things on it before we take off and go home for dinner. He will be happy it is ready for him when we arrive.

What a horrible experience and what a disappointment afterwards when they sent you on wild goosechases and then you get a new one home and it still does not work. I also hate returning things. I feel terrible. There are places I can do it but I still do not feel right about it but need one that works. I was very happy to see your post Ann, even though it was quite awhile ago. Did it ever get straightened out?

I also am not fond of returning items because I don't like the hassle however if it was a big item purchase, then I make sure we return it to get our money back or have it replaced. Though I usually have one of the guys test it first before taking it home.
