The other day my husband and I received a notice in the mail from Social Security about next year's payments. I was surprised to see that they will taking an additional $54 and change out of his checks for next year. What??? Don't they know we are getting too little now? Searching for an explanation I called my sister-in-law to see if she had heard anything about another fee, charge or whatever. She called he insurance person and they told her that it was a charge for people who did not have the insurance to cover what Medicare didn't cover. He now has $104 and change, for Medicare, and $54, and change, for not have the extra insurance, taken out of his social security check. I however have $104 and change, for Medicare, and $50 and change, for prescription part d, taken out of my social security check. I also have $204 and change taken out of my bank account for the extra insurance. I will be talking to social security next week day to find out if what I heard from my sister-in-law is true. I at least want to know why they have to take all of this money out of our puny little checks. Happy retirement everyone.

We are without insurance for December because we could not enroll until January and we can not get medicare because we are to young for it. We tried medicade and we had to high of an income. So than we went through United health care and we will get that starting Jan the first. But we have not received any cards yet. So we are going back down there Monday.

@jstory07 I know you will get it all straight soon. United Health Care is a good place to go through.

That's a big chunk they are taking away from you guys. I hope you can get it figured out and find the real reason why their taking that amount away. I do not want to retire as the money is not that great. I will work til the day i can't.

@HazySue When we're working we get a statement periodically showing how much we'll get per month. So, with what you actually get, do they already have the fees and such taken out of their estimate of what we'd get or does that come off of that?

@Blondie2222 I have worked all my life and am still working. I have come to the point when I need to stop. I wish I could have a larger percent of the money I put into the system.

How can there be people without insurance? It's a federal law that everyone MUST have insurance!!

@HazySue -- I'm sorry, I meant the coverage for people who don't have Medicare or Medicaid or VA (that's what I have ).

NO raise in social security this year but not surprising that they found a way to take even more out of it

@Marilynda1225 I expect to not get a cost of living increase I just didn't expect them to take out more.

Retirement "sucks" in some ways! They didn't give anyone a cost of living raise as they said that the cost of living had not gone up! Where are they living! However, they can take more out of those small checks anytime they want to!

@HazySue I hate to hear that Susan. It's a shame that more and more people are having to work past their "normal" retirement age so they can get by!

Without enough money, retirement can never be a very happy experience.

A gain we do not get an in crease on our measly soc ial security. \j only get about 345 a month so have SSI to help pay for being here i nthis retirement center.

@Hatley I am looking into getting help after I retire. They say I have too many medical problems to get help because I am still working.

@dodo19 I hope so too. I can't imagine why they would take out so much money.

This just shows how good the government is in taking our money. if they give you a dollar, they expect to take back $10 from you. I do not think you will succeed in getting the charges waived. If you can get half of it waived, that is good enough.

@scheng1 I don't see any difference in sight. If you work past retirement some say you are taking jobs from the young. If you don't work you can't pay your bills.

@HazySue I've not heard about taking jobs from the young. I wouldn't worry too much about that. I believe there are enough jobs to go around if people would just take something that's available until they can find something better yet.

And that's another reason why I should wait another seven or so years before retiring. The 204.00 in extra premiums you pay, is that just for you alone, or for your husband too? If just yourself, why would you get it and not him too? Course, the additional they want to take out is much less than what you're paying on your own. Did he not get the extra plan with his medicare? I heard that if a person doesn't pick it before a certain date it gets messed up, but since I have a few more years before I'll need to pick any, I haven't checked it all out yet.

@whiteream the check is getting smaller and smaller as we move through the years. My mother gets more than I do and she never worked.
