Mail order strudel and our donkey

Mom tells the story of her Mom making out of this world strudel. One of my sisters found a bakery that would mail pieces of strudel.
Fine. The box arrived at our doorstep. Pie dough should be flaky not hard and rocky. Same with strudel dough, only more so.
These chunks of strudel were, well, boulder like. I do not have a microwave. I heated some in the oven. We chomped on our slices. Boulders with walnuts and bits of apple.
Finally this morning I carried down a piece to our Peter burro. (donkey) Its 20 above if we are lucky. Treat time, Peter!! He carefully took a teeny bite, chewed, spit it out. I made hubby's day when I told him the tale of Peter burro and the strudel.

I would have been so upset. I would call that company and tell them of my dissatisfaction. I mean even the donkey wouldn't eat it. What's that tell you.

@fishtiger58 I've been wondering if I shouldn't tell my sister that the stuff was crud- she kept hinting that the strudel cost a huge chunk of money and sometime she wanted to splurge and buy some for her family. Whoops. Do what?

@fishtiger58 She's mailed this stuff to my Mom for three years now- Mom staying at another sisters until this year. The other sister did not say anything, either. They'll blame me cause I do not have a microwave to heat it in. (I would never heat my pie in a microwave, either cause it would ruin the crust.)

We had an Austrian girl staying with us once. She told us that strudel dough should be stretched so thin that you could read your love letters through it. (It is apparently gently stretched by putting the palms of the hands under it until it is so thin to be nearly transparent).

@sallypup Here's a video instruction. How he gets it so evenly thin without breaking it, I don't know. I would despair!

@owlwings My Mom used to talk about watching her Mom somehow or other make a strudel dough stretch out to the size of a card table. Amazing to me. I have made noodles and I can't get them to a good thinness. I wish I could have watched my Grandmother perform her baking magic.
