Tempted by road kill

Yup. That was me. I drove slowly by the neighbor's dairy, peering out the window. What is that? There on the road? A small cardboard box? Don't want to roll over an unknown something. It looked to be an owl. Its wonderous wing was stretched out in its final flight. Maybe a barn owl? I was tempted to throw on my brakes and see about studying the bird closer and maybe even picking it up and putting it in the trunk. Owls fascinate me. (Jane Yolen wrote a fantastic children's book on going owling.) I would love to have some owl feathers. Even in death, owls are mystical. I grief and mourn over such a gorgeous entity brought to earth.

Around here we see eagles and hawks, both magnificent birds. I saw a bloody hawk on the power line the other day and thought he was hurt until I realized he just ate his breakfast.

@painsOnSlate We're getting more birds now that our seasonal creek is back. A bald eagle seemed to be studying the chicken coop one morning. That hawk must have been an interesting fella to watch.

We have a rather large one living in our woods.

@abbygreenhill You are so fortunate. I'd have a notepad at the ready if I were you- poetry would just burble out with a neighbor like that.

I know of someone who deliberately drove at a pheasant in the hope they could eat their road-kill. To me the idea was sickening. Fortunately the bird got away.

@sallypup I believe it was a matter of legality. if they chased after the bird and killed it then they would be poaching, running it down with a car is legal.

@pgiblett Crazy lawyer stuff. Every so often I see a rooster pheasant on the side of the road walking around. I hope to never hit such a beautiful creature.

@pgiblett That does sound disgusting. When we lived in Idaho, folks were trying to get the game wardens to hand over road kill deer so that they could butcher the meat for hungry people.

Reminds me of my time in Nevada. An owl lived in the big tree at our campsite. He (or she) would herald each sunset with loud hooting. Right over our heads!

@sallypup I don't know, I think I would be more tempted to drive away swiftly.

@sallypup I once knew someone who make stuffed animals out of fur from road kill and sold them. He did a good business.

I want to see an owl in real life. I haven't seen one before. Owls looks so mysterious.

@trivia79 Years ago a white owl flew across the road right in front of my car. You're right. Its sudden ghostly presence woke me up.

@sallypup Did you know that snowy owls are slightly bio-luminescent? They really do glow!

@sallypup They are even mysterious with the roles they had in Harry Potter movie series. I don't even know how they sounds like. One thing is for sure, i can't take care of them because they are nocturnal
