When Joining A Challenge, it's Good to...

When joining a challenge here on mylot it would behoove all of us to use tags so interested parties could find similar posts. The problem is that we all don't use the same tags, but if you take note as reading the similar posts of others, you could edit your own to include tags others have used that may be spelled a bit differently. For instance. Lori A Moore recently did a post about Seven Childhood Memories She tagged hers as 'childhood memories', while I tagged mine originally as 'seven childhood memories', Janet/JaboUK tagged hers as '7 childhood memories' and others just put memories or other tags not related to anyone else. While the different ones used are fine, if you'd like others that don't know you to find your posts when looking for those that responded to your challenge, then it's good to add some similar tags that were used on the discussions already written. I tried adding tags to my comments hoping to tie everyone's discussions together, but it seems like the tags in comments don't work in the same way as they do in posts. Maybe they used to work in that manner in the old mylot and that's why it's included now. Actually, you can click on the tags in the comments, but it will only show you those discussions that include those tags, just not any that contain the tags in the comments only. In other words, or to try to be even more plain, (but hopefully not more of a pain-), putting the same tags with comments don't pull all the related posts together as I hoped it would. So, if you want to have your post/challenge included with the other related posts use the same related tags on the discussion itself.

I never thought of doing that.

@just4him It does't seem to help either, but I may do it some out of habit if nothing else.

You don't use tags, or you've not thought about tagging in the comment section too?

@MarshaMusselman I've never seen a need for tags in comments

It's a great suggestion and certainly not one I thought of. Hope this works and they all get tied together.

It also means that if a person used one of the tags listed, they might want to edit their discussion to include all of the tags being used. But, not everyone will do that.

You did use one of the tags listed here, Belle. But there are at least three different pages with the posts about the childhood memories. There's a page under 7 childhood memories and those currently show three users that did that challenge. Also included is this discussion. There's a page under Seven childhood memories and those show three users, (you being one of them), plus this discussion. There's a page under childhood memories and those show four other users, one being LoriAMoore, plus this discussion. I also found some that did this challenge and they only used memories, or precious memories and completely different tags also. I ended up adding the main ones to my discussion later.

Sometimes I do add tags in my comments but don't always think of it.

This isn't recommending adding tags to comments, but realizing that even if tags are in comments it won't bring anyone to that same discussion, unless the discussion itself has the same tags. I will use tags in my comments, but I may quit doing so now.

Well, it seems that the tag works even in comments Marsha.

@MarshaMusselman I believe that, when starting a challenge, the best is to ask people which words to tag.

@LadyDuck Or, maybe suggest a word or string of words to use.

The tags are both helpful and confusing.

If you mean the tags in general and how they are used around the site, then, yes they can be a bit confusing at times. I've learned recently that when we tag posts the tags we use is what causes certain types of discussions to be shown to us when looking at the explore and then interesting tabs. In fact, a member recently told another member that her discussion wasn't interesting, which came across as quite rude. I'm thinking the one person may have found that discussion from the interesting tab, otherwise, why would they make that specific comment? But, the tags will help me in the future find specific posts, and for that reason I'll probably keep using them.

@Morleyhunt If you never tag your comments that's okay since they don't seem to work anyway. Tags only seem to work and corral together discussions themselves, not comments too.

I shared one of my childhood memories, and it was not a good one. It had some shades of horror movie.
