Pleasing the Customer

As a seamstress, the alterations at a local bridal shop were my responsibility. Some customers were very easy to please and appreciative of your efforts. Others went out of their way to make your life difficult. One customer in particular comes to mind. A middle aged Italian mother of the bride, had purchased a floor length gown that needed to be shortened. There were no other alterations required, but she insisted that the dress was too loose through the hips and I should take it in. After hemming the dress, I gave the dress a careful pressing, but did not take it in at the hips as I knew it would be too tight and cause the seams to pull. When this woman returned to pick up the dress, she tried it on and ranted for at least ten minutes that the dress was now too tight, and I obviously had no idea what I was doing. (Remember, I had not taken it it, just let her think I had.) I assured her, that I would let it out again, at no extra charge. Two days later she returned to try on the dress one more time. I had given the dress another careful pressing but not altered the side seams at all. As soon as she tried it, on, she started again. Now I had let it out too much, it fit like a sack. What kind of seamstress was I if I could not get the dress to fit her the way she wanted it to fit. It was tempting to let her know what I really thought of her, but I restrained myself. She paid her bill and left in a huff. It would be interesting to know if she took the dress somewhere else to be altered or if this was simply a scam to try to avoid paying to have the alterations done.

It very well could have bene a scam. However some people are just impossible to please regardless. I hated working with customers because of this.

Customers like this are one of the reasons I have no regrets about closing my store.

Oh, my! I think that some people do complain continually, just so they can avoid paying for things.

Now, that is proof that you just can't please some people. I would have wanted to tell her so bad what I had done, or not done, if it had been me. But, the customer is always right and all you can do is smile.

It was tempting, but sometimes it is better to just smile!

I deal with customers every day, where I work as a cashier, and our customers for our business. I can say that the ones in the retail business are less easy to please than our customers are, although I've had a few gems of that type before too. I tend to not consider someone is scamming until it's brought to the forefront, so I don't know, but anything is possible. I recently had someone run to get an item they forgot and I continued to ring up their order. When she returned she asked whether I'd already rung up her chicken as she decided against that particular purchase, It was a bit later after she already left the store, that i realized she ended up taking the chicken without paying for it. My assumption would normally be that she did it unintentionally, but I don't really see how she didn't notice she was picking it up. She got a ten dollar package of chicken for free, which was maddening. People do tend to scam in ways we wouldn't even consider, so it's hard to give the benefit of the doubt many times.

What a pain. I bet you were glad to get rid of her. It reminds me of the joke about a woman who bought a chicken from the butcher. He only had the one left but hadn't told her that. She asked if he had one slightly bigger so he took the first chicken out, came back with the same one saying it was a little bigger and the woman was happy. Then she decided she'd take the two of them. It didn't say what happened next!

Though there is a saying that "customers are always right," such incident you had gone through will make one flare up in anger because of that rude attitude. It causes stress on your part.
