The parcel was finally collected

Further to my recent post about taking in a parcel last Thursday, the owner has finally arrived to collect it. He arrived at my door earlier this evening to ask if I had a parcel for him, which I certainly did. Apparently he has spent the last week in London staying with friends, which is precisely what I suspected it could be. I am glad that I did not contact the police in his absence, which could have resulted in his arriving home to find his front door damaged and temporarily boarded up.

Finding your door broken and boarded up by the police is not something that I would like to experience. He has to thank you Barry.

@LadyDuck My next door neighbour is usually at home so this should not be necessary.

It was just circumstantial that I happened to end up with the parcel and he was away for several days.

@Asylum I hope he will do the same if the same thing should happen to you.

If he has a package arriving when he will be gone he needs to let someone know that he will be gone for a while so no one is worrying about him.

That is a good point. I never go away without informing my next door neighbour.

@Marcyaz I do not live next door to him, so he most likely never expected me to end up with the delivery.

@Asylum I think most people would inform their neighbor so they would take in the package for them.

Glad that finally you have found out your neighbor is fine and just went for a holiday. Yes, I think it'd be really upset if he found his door has damaged. Perhaps it's good if he tells you he will be leaving for quite some time next time, so you will not be worried.

As I have replied to several members, he lives a few houses away so would have expected the parcel to be left at my house.

@kaka135 No, in that case I would have been aware of his absence.

@Asylum I thought he's just your next door neighbor.

I think you handled it great. I certainly wouldn't want a visit from the police just as I am getting home from a nice holiday.

I would have been worse if they had arrived shortly before because he could have arrived home to discover his front door boarded up after being broken down.

@celticeagle If I reported his absence and highlighted my concern, they may have wanted to ensure that he was not inside and hurt.

@Asylum ...Why would they break down his door?

Its seems you saved the day. Well if not the day, the front door of the parcel owner at least

I am surprised that he ordered something and then went away, which seems rather careless.

@Inlemay This is where it gets confusing when you do not know the neighbours several doors away.

@Asylum ummmmm - I seem to do things like that often, but my neighbours - well most people down the street know who Lany is - so they all sign for my parcels and bring them along when i am back.

I am surprised that he did not let you know. Neighbours usually keep a closer eye on their neighbour's houses while they are away!

As I mentioned to several other members, he lives a few doors away and no doubt never expected me to end up with it.

@garymarsh6 The parcel was delivered by a private delivery company, so if I had not taken the parcel in it would probably have been returned to the sender before he arrived home.

That was wise of you not to report your neighbour's absence.

Well that is one mystery solved. Who would have guessed that being nice would have resulted in your being in possession of the package for so many days.He is lucky the parcel wasn't returned to sender since he was gone so long. Here they make 3 attempts to deliver and then it goes back.

That would have happened if I had not taken the parcel in, so it was fortunate that I did.

That's a good ending to the story. Did you tell him you had been worried about him?

Glad you did a follow-up post about that parcel. Thankfully everything is okay and the fellow was just away. Good thing the police didn't have to get involved but it certainly made us all think of so many scenarios as to what happened to the person who owned the parcel.

When I go away for while, I let me neighbors know. I tell them, "If you see swarthy men hauling off all of my loudspeakers and guitars, they're probably criminals."

I always tell my next door neighbour, who in turn informs me when he is going away. In this case the person concerned lives a few doors away, so it was reasonable for him to expect that nobody would leave a delivery with me.

I hope you mentioned to him that you were worried. He could have left word that he was away.

I did voice my concern, but to be fair he would probably not expect the parcel to be left at my house. The delivery man asked me because he saw me coming out of my house at the time, whereas normally he would have tried to leave with a neighbour who lived next door.

That is a problem solved, I would be reluctant to take in a parcel these days. I hope the man was suitably grateful.

Oh yes he was very pleased because if I had not accepted it the courier would probably have returned it to the sender by now. I am only glad that I did not contact the police before now.

I would have contacted the Police with my concerns in time, but wanted to be certain that he was not on holiday first.
